Weekend miscellany

Here’s another one-question quiz. You’re a government (sorry, don’t mean to insult you; it’s only a thought experiment). Protestors rally around your country’s most famous national monument. What do you do? Here’s the answer. (But of course it has nothing to do with the protests. It’s just … um … for traffic control. Yeah, that’s it. Traffic control.)

  • A sad, strange glimpse into history: “Cosmonaut crashed into earth ‘crying in rage.'” It’s also a touching story of loyalty and friendship. And courage. And the savagery of bureaucracy.
  • ReadyForZero.com. A free site for people who want a solid plan for getting out of credit card debt. Caveat: You’ll need to give personal info, but the site looks useful and very well vetted.
  • Ways to deal with prepping fatigue. (Tip o’ hat to S.)
  • This happens all too often with large-scale animal rescues, especially those where one person is in charge and goes a little nuts (as animal rescuers tend to do). It’s a surprise that it happened with racehorses and a formerly well-run foundation. Fortunately, the group’s backers have the resources to remedy the situation. (NY Times free registration link.)
  • Granted surfer Sion Milosky lived on the edge. But did the fedgov contribute to his drowning? “Will there be more such defiance of the NOAA ban? ‘Yeah,’ said Clark, who said he ‘pulled maybe 10 guys out of trouble’ via Jet Ski at Mavericks in foggy conditions Monday evening. ‘If NOAA and the National Marine Sanctuary puts no value on human life, it’s a law that needs to be broken.'”
  • You’ve seen videos of skateboarding dogs. But have you ever seen a dog as good as Extreme Pete? Everybody loves canine skateboarders. Well, except for British nanny staters, as usual.
  • While we’re on the subject of dogs: Here’s an Irish dog who regularly swims with a dolphin.
  • And to end on another canine high note, check out Friends to the Forlorn pitbull rescue. (The group’s web site.) (Tip o’ hat to P.T.)

“One problem with focusing all the time on prepping is not just fatigue, but living in fear. That wears a body down more than most things.”

      Yeah, what he said….

What’s even stranger is I’m not afraid to die and already know I don’t want to be around if it becomes like a Mad Max movie….great link, lol at the behind the cow post…..

Best part? All the other links are so entirely different topics to think about πŸ˜€

Make your preps fit you, not the other way around. Have a “family game night” with some party-type junk foods (home-made or not, your choice) and a deck of cards or a board game. When I was little my family had a weekly euchre night, where we’d just play and laugh together.
(I should mention, my family doesn’t get along so well, which makes those times extra-special, when we all set aside our tempers and foul moods for a few hours.)

Every time you post a dog-rescue link, I’m tempted to mention this: The actor who plays my favorite TV supervillian, Cliff Simon, is the spokesman for Karma Rescue: http://www.karmarescue.org/
(I’m not so sure that’s freedom-related, I just know that the guy is HOT!!!)

I visited Mavericks once, the beach section since I’m neither a swimmer or a surfer….It’s commonly referred to as “a washing machine” and that’s correct, that’s what it looks like out there – a washing machine on top of thousands of pointy rocks…..Anyone who pushes off out there usually knows death can happen at any second, it’s not so much a suicide mission – more like roulette odds….

I highly doubt even a hovering helicopter would have helped, let alone a jet ski not knowing where to look, especially since waves push em down not up……

In spite of my online name, I’m not familiar with NOAA or NMS, but I have a feeling it’s not so much a fed-gov inspired law as it is from some of those environmentalists that have overtaken habitats that use to belong to free use organisms……

I fight prepping fatigue by going to Italy for 2 months. It restores me.

      I like the following comments:

Once I was safely at the bar sipping my refreshment, the bartender looked at me and opined. β€œI know why they gave you such a hard time. Look at the shirt you are wearing. β€œOne has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws. MLK.” He had a point.
