Hastert may be a criminal. But other feds are worse. (Never mind that Hastert and his ilk made them worse.)
I admit it. Maeve Binchy, the mega-selling Irish author of simple domestic tales, is one of my guilty girly pleasures. Binchy died in 2012 of heart problems. While looking for something completely unrelated to her health, I stumbled upon this nice article about how she made the best of her initial diagnosis. Inspiring.
The fedgov has recently made it 5x more expensive to do. But Americans are again surrendering their citizenship in small but record-setting numbers. (Tip o’ hat to MJR)
Oh yeah, and the other big difference between Dolezal and Jenner is that she’s getting ruined and s/he’s making millions.
Here’s a bet. I’ve thought this ever since the first rumors that Bruce KARDASHIAN Jenner was going trans. He’ll make his millions and get tons of priceless PR for becoming Caitlyn, then a year or two from now he’ll quietly go back to being Bruce. The current media sensation will turn out to be less about genuine gender identity than about fame and bux.
I think it even more likely after learning he’s keeping his man parts.
BearJune 14, 2015 10:32 am
Claire, you’re clearly following the Jenner story much closer than I. Personally, I have no interest in his alleged man or woman parts. (I was impressed with the Photoshop skills displayed on that magazine cover.)

I was just thinking that someone should make a browser extension to block K*******n and J****r news, and speak of the devil…
I see at least addons on that first page.

“Claire, you’re clearly following the Jenner story much closer than I.”
Guilty as charged, though I learned about the man-parts thing only by accident. Totally agreed on the Photoshopping of that cover, though! And the talents of Annie Liebowitz. Every candid shot ever taken shows the new Ms Jenner as being one horrifically ugly broad. And as wrinkled and saggy as you’d expect of someone that age.

@Bear: SNERK!
Maeve Binchy’s isn’t the 1st story I’ve read about learning to take control of your life after a major illness. My mailman writes that he feels better now than he ever has. (I’m not ready to endorse all his methods, but apparently they’ve worked for him.)
It’s a shame the the Deslidifier doesn’t have a parser for Gizmag.
So, Bruce is keeping his parts? Alrighty then, I can’t help but question the sincerity of his transgender transition. (Also can’t help but think about lumberjacks, even though in my heart I know it’s mean. I do believe that Bruce is a troubled soul.)
I agree with Joel: I’m a trans-financial person. There ought to be public assistance for that, no? I think I ought to be able to live my life more like Neal Stephenson. So, if I just say that I’m a physicist and successful author, that ought to make everyone treat as such.

I have questions about bibliotherapy, too. I think local book clubs might do the job as well. At least the camaraderie and friendly discussion might help to loosen the personality a bit. And the choices are usually voluntary, even if unanimously agreed on.
Re Jenner: He’s a he (man parts or no) until he can develop a uterus and deliver vaginally. It’s what’s on the inside that counts.
It’s beyond me. I only look this stuff up for you anyway, Claire 🙂

Oh. My. God. What’s most scary is that there was a time that about half of those would have looked HOT.
And lumberjacks. After some of your comments on the Pythons, I just knew you’d come up with lumberjacks …

Dunno about happiness, but I think books makes one’s life richer.
As for the Jenner keeping parts, well, it’s known that those who undergo the surgery have an extremely high rate of suicide.

Carl M. Cannon has a good point that asset forfeiture is “theft by any other name.” Though I tend to use a stronger term: armed robbery under color of law. His term also fits the IRS refusing to return every penny of money taken for making structured deposits, even though all the money was rightfully earned, and its owner plans to pay taxes on it.
What he forgot to mention is that every penny taken by the IRS and every other taxing agency is extortion, the most heinous kind of theft. And every government employee is guilty on cashing his/her first paycheck of receipt of stolen funds. Criminals all.

Can reading make you happier?
Well, at least when you read what I write it makes me happier.
the difference in principle between Caitlyn Jenner and Rachel Dolezal
I tend to look at the results.
Whether you agree with Jenner’s description of his/her situation or not, it leads you to believe he/she is genetically male dressing and acting female, which is true. I don’t find any false statements from the past claiming he was a man who did not have gender issues. (And given internet, I presume any such would have surfaced.)
Dolezal’s past public statements, spoken and written, intentionally led people to believe she was born to parents of color, which is false.
Dolezal lied. Jenner told the truth.

Speaking of “writing:” Beginning June 12, the NRA National Firearms Museum is proud to host Steampunk Guns, a new exhibit that combines a fantastic science fiction world with the modern steel canvas afforded by real firearm designs. The exhibition is made possible by ModVic, LLC and generous artists and will run through the end of 2015. http://www.theoutdoorwire.com/story/1434314325pm2e21rec8b

“Dunno about happiness, but I think books makes one’s life richer.” I guess it was because of the Jenner context, but at first glance I read that not as “books” but as “boobs”. Perhaps that says something about me. But as far as I can see the sentence works just fine both ways!
Back during the last major census, there were a couple of links posted to sumpreme court decisions that, when put together, established that, legally speaking, a person’s “race” was whatever they said it was.
I’m suprized it took this long for someone to test that in the courts of public opinion.

RE Rachel Dolezal
I’m much more interested in a comparison no one seems to making between person-of-color Rachel Dolezal and person-of-color/native-american Elizabeth Warren.
[Bruce Caitlyn Jenner and Rachel Dolezal are not much different. Both struggle with identity issues, but one is praised and another is mocked.]
Oh, I don’t know. I’ve seen a lot of mocking of Bruce Jenner over on Western Rifle Shooters. I suppose the point is that rightist mocking is even-handed. It’s good to not be a hypocrite in one’s mocking. 😉
[Dolezal’s past public statements, spoken and written, intentionally led people to believe she was born to parents of color, which is false.]
Guess I don’t see why this matters. What annoys me is that when I buy a gun I have to enter my race in the 4473 (which itself is bullshit, but that part is the shittiest).
[“One’s racial identity is not a qualifying criteria or disqualifying standard for NAACP leadership,” the group said in a statement on Friday.]
So saith NAACP. So who cares what race Dolezal is. Anyway why do we call Obama “black” when he is manifestly brown? Are we back to that “one drop of negro blood” thing?
BTW, apparently some people think neither Clinton nor Obama was the first “black” president, but that Warren G. Harding was, the 20th Century’s best president.
The difference in principle between Caitlyn Jenner and Rachel Dolezal?
Absolutely none. [grin]
Ohgads, Bear. That’s hysterical!

Unfortunately Dolezal has given up the fight. http://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/naacp-official-resigns-amid-race-controversy/ar-BBlaVht Too bad; it was shaping up to be a most amusing circular firing squad.
