- In the era of Common Core, classical education begins to rebound.
- Why on earth is there even a debate about whether cops who kill people should be identified? Especially when this is the LEO culture we live with? If you or I killed somebody, or were even suspected of it, our names would be blatted all over the media.
- Woman says she was strip-searched, drugged, and locked up in a metal ward (and billed for it) because cops don’t believe she owned her BMW.
- Man in jail for minor offenses ends up in a coma because jailers wouldn’t let paramedics take him to the hospital.
- The cultural silliness gets sillier. In one corner of the arts universe, Snow White is no longer allowed to be accompanied by dwarves. (A healthy LOL that prominent dwarf actor Warwick Davis — Professor Flitwick, Griphook, and Willow Ufgood — is among the first to object.)
- World’s dumbest bank robber asks clerk to put the stolen funds into his personal account.
(Big H/T MJR!)

De Montfort Hall said ‘dwarf’ is not a term that ‘people feel comfortable with’.
Huh? Has that changed again? I have a hard time keeping up with these things, but I thought “dwarf” was the acceptable PC term. Never call them “midgets,” I remember that much. Are we now not supposed to use the D-word? Now it’s “persons of diminutiveness,” perhaps?
See, it doesn’t matter if the actual dwarfs mind the term or not… we’re supposed to bow down to the silly people who populate the touchy/feely world of the politically correct – whatever that may be at the moment.
Or not. I choose not. If anyone says they are “not comfortable” or are offended by something I say, I just tell them gently, “That’s not my problem. I have zero control over how YOU choose to feel.”
They must really hate this song. https://youtu.be/1NvgLkuEtkA
You remember back when some do-gooder decided to try to ban midget bowling, and the midgets in question objected because they were making pretty good money at it?
And really, Snow White? Isn’t that racist? And the whole story just reinforces gender stereotypes too. Re-write the whole thing using androgynous people of indeterminate race.
And, in other news. REO Speedwagon guitarist Gary Richrath, is no longer Pushin’ On.
Back in the 70’s, Bob Short, the owner of the Washington Senators, was responsible for the team’s moving out of town. The “Short People” song greatly increased in popularity for a time 🙂
Back when freaks were in sideshows, they must have had more self esteem than many do now. They were valued, as people would pay to see them. Now a bunch likely are on disability and hide in rooms. The actors in this movie must have really, really enjoyed making it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freaks I was very disappointed to read in that article that the director’s career never recovered. I very much liked the movie and the humor.
A classical education would be great. I’m sorry I missed my chance at one. Maybe I can go back to grammar school again….
The police union guy has it all wrong. When named, one cop may have to look over his shoulder, and maybe deservedly so. But when not named, the entire force has to look over theirs, because all citizens will start to worry about what will happen to them if they are stopped by the cops. Old story – one bad apple spoils the barrel.
And of course SFPD doesn’t care about what those two blue goons said in the coffee shop. Isn’t this the same team that shot a guy on the BART train platform in plain view of dozens? SFPD is a barrel already spoiled – but they’ll whine like children if citizens start to presume they need to defend themselves from the SFPD goons.
I remember the days when people often thought a black person couldn’t afford a Cadillac so it must have been stolen. But I thought that crap stopped 20 years ago or more. Ridiculous. I hope she sues for and gets a fat retirement check. Actually two – one from the PD, the other from the hospital. Neither had any business doing what they did.
So now we change the Snow White name to ‘Snow White and the Seven Children’? Why not just ‘Septomom’? Somebody is just a huge ASS. Yeah, like the author said – ‘moral masturbation’. And as disgusting to the rest of us as genuine public jerking off would be – only it can’t be treated as a sickness. It’s just stupid – really stupid.
[“We went the charter route [instead of starting a private school] because we believed everybody should have access to a good public education, and is capable of it,” said Peggy Schunk, a mother who helped found the school and who now runs the school’s admissions and human resources.]
Not to mention, the easy access to taxpayer dollars. Charter schools are another fake reform; just another way of avoiding the real cure, which is homeschooling and independent schools. Because one can come up with a couple of examples of good charter results is irrelevant – *every* school reform managed that, all the way back to Horace Mann, but had no staying power, because it remained part of the system. Look at all the effort Gatto put into government schooling.
Homeschoolers have been digging into classical education since it started in the ’70’s.
[Why on earth is there even a debate about whether cops who kill people should be identified?]
Because that is the way the world works. What is unimaginable, is a universe in which police do not get away with literal murder. How anyone can believe that is possible is beyond me.
[Or not. I choose not. If anyone says they are “not comfortable” or are offended by something I say, I just tell them gently, “That’s not my problem. I have zero control over how YOU choose to feel.’]
I prefer to respond with, “Blow it out your ass.” 🙂
I agree that a police officer who kills someone should be identified, not only for the reason David mentioned (which is correct) but also because they should be treated exactly as anyone else would be under similar circumstances. Too many police believe that they are our masters, rather than merely members of the community who have been tasked with a specific job. Such people need to be taken down a few pegs.
I’d like to offer a police story which rather pleases me. I often complain that when a police officer appears to have done something wrong the immediate reaction of his fellows (and especially his union) is to “circle the wagons” and use every means possible to protect one of their own. The (wholly predictable) result of protecting the bad apples is, of course, for all police officers, even the good ones, to be tarred with the same brush, and to elevate tensions between them and the community. In the small town where I live, last month a patrolman was fired for using excessive force on a suspect. The interesting thing is that neither the suspect nor his attorney had filed a complaint; rather, it was from other officers on the force. The chief conducted an internal investigation, including reviewing the body camera, and promptly fired the officer. This is how it is supposed to work, and I commend him. Not surprisingly, there are no tensions between the police and the citizens in our little town. Thank you for the classical education article.
