Weekend links

  • Lots of media outlets are reporting on Jill Stein’s efforts to get recounts in the three “Hillary firewall” states that Trump won. How come so few are reporting on Stein’s comically scammish and ever-escalating claims about the amount of money she needs?
  • The Electronic Frontier Foundation reports on censorship in social media (.pdf). (Very readable report, too.)
  • Where is Julian Assange and what has happened to Wikileaks?
  • Of the many barbaric acts for which ISIS will be forever damned, their deliberate destruction of historical sites will certainly be one. Yes, it happens all the time in war, but seldom is it done with such sheer religious zeal, to stamp out imagined 3,000-year-old “heresy.”
  • So why did the federal Bureau of Prisons send representatives to a notorious CIA torture site, proclaim it to be perfectly acceptable, then try to cover up the whole business?
  • Wonder what will happen now to the effort, however wussy, to curb arbitrary civil forfeiture and the human tragedies that follow it?
  • Solving the mystery of Boston’s great molasses disaster a hundred years later. (An encouraging reminder that some American schools still teach something other than social-justice pecksniffery.)
  • OMG these photos are beautiful: huge dogs and tiny toddlers.

Because it’s the time of year for having extra power …

Just reporting in here: I still can’t see your Amazon ads. How much trouble would it be to add links? Probably more than they’re worth, given you know how little online shopping I really do…

Joel — I’ll be ending regular use of the ads on the 30th, so no worries. After that, I probably will go back mostly to links, as the special rate for ad purchases will go away. Using regular links between now and then might actually pull traffic away from the ads, resulting in lower commissions for the same items.

Hardly anyone is using the ads in any case. It’s a shame from my POV because using the ads (even just finding an item through their search box or clicking on a featured item, then buying some other product) earns me a LOT higher commission. Hugely higher. This month only. But on the bright side, this probably means that my efforts to get people to bookmark and automatically use my Amazon links are working.

A big thank you to the Commentariat members who can see the ads and use them — especially to the dear stranger who made some serious purchases that way.

“Fake news”? I’ve read that Stein has raised some $4 million; allegedly near what she raised during the campaign. So: Soros funding? Damfino, but I wouldn’t be surprised.

Re: Assange – He ran afoul of the Clintons. I need no further explanation. I am curious though, why he lasted as long as he did.

Desertrat — Yup. I, too doubt that the millions she so miraculously raised in a few days time came from the Dem “grassroots.” Soros. People or governments connected with the Clinton Foundation. PAC money. Would loooooove to see the donor list for the recount.

Would also love to see where it all goes eventually.

Bob — I’m afraid I agree with you. He ran afoul of the Clintons AND the uber-governments of the English-speaking world. I just hope he emerges again one day, safe and sound. But given the vicious mob he went up against …

I am beginning to think that the penultimate litmus test of one’s theology is whether it celebrates and is historically grounded in the creation of art or the destruction of it.

Indeed, Dana. What kind of “religion,” or any philosophy, encourages such hate and destruction?

The wonder and joy of the tiny tots with the huge dogs is somehow cleansing.

I liked his earlier role as Detective Ron Harris in Barney Miller and he also appeared in some episodes of Sanford and Son. I enjoyed both series!

Thanks, Joel. I’ll be very glad if that report turns out to be true.

Since there is a zero percent chance that a recount of a 22,000 vote loss can succeed (it has not happened in American history to my knowledge), Stein is merely taking the money of suckers and not giving it back. No, Soros isn’t wasting his money on this nonsense. Dec.13 is coming up quite soon…

Remember when the msm was all “O.M.G. Trump may not accept the outcome of the election!”

the penultimate litmus test of one’s theology
It’s certainly a valid test for whether one is civilized.
