Bernie’s tree

Acrylic on board, 9×12″.

Well, not really Bernie’s tree. I was trying to figure out how Bernie Fuchs did that amazing thing with light through tree branches. I didn’t quite figure it out — but I was pleased to get closer than I expected. I like that blazing sunset, too, even though it lost something in the scan.

Here’s the illustration I was working from, in the children’s book Ride Like the Wind, which Fuchs wrote, as well as illustrated. I wasn’t trying to copy the tree. I was trying to copy the technique as near as I could (while leaving out the horse’s butt).

I actually like the impossible shape of my tree better than his, but next time I’ll begin having already learned a few things. It would also help to have canvas and the right type of paint. But even without them I’ll do better the second time around.

I think the similarity between the two is excellent. Progress every day. And if you’re going to compare yourself to Bernie, I want to see if he can do eyes. Bet you beat him all to goodness on eyes.

I saw “Bernie’s Tree,” no leaves in the dying sun, and thought how well it represented Sanders.
    [hangs head in shame]

    “Progress every day.”

That’s the main thing, Karen. Thank you.

larryarnold — LOL! Now I’ll never be able to see any of Bernie’s trees the same way again. And there are so many of them like that!
