- The president of the University of Chicago is on board with free speech on campus. So are the students, apparently. 100 professors, on the other hand …
- Who are the rich white men institutionalizing transgender ideology?
- Some Silicon Valley parents are raising their kids tech-free. Or at least tech-light.
- Ah, beautiful San Francisco! City of charm, personality, progress, wealth … and disease-bearing streets. (And to that eejit woman in the article: No, “more temporary housing for the homeless” would not get to the root of the problem.)
- Somebody leaked all the contacts from Anthony Weiner’s computer. Al Gore … Ariana Huffington … Jake Tapper … Hillary Clinton … addresses, phone numbers, email addies.
- “Holy Envy.” A Mormon learns to appreciate Jewish insights.
- Live long and better.
- Deer, fine. The occasional raccoon at the garbage can; handleable. Even a black bear wandering through the yard now and then. But when a cougar peeks in your suburban window, that’s taking things a bit too far.
- Is emotional attachment to our dogs just some modern frippery? A new look into a very old grave finds puppy love in prehistory.
- It could happen to you (though it’s not bloody likely). A barber told a shy, overweight insurance agent to grow a beard. He’s now a red-hot model.
- A word to the wise, children. Next time you’re thinking about setting off fireworks in your car … don’t.
The next time you see a fireworks going off inside a car, don’t walk towards it.
No sign of our resident mountain lion for a long time now. I’ve seen tracks and scat in the summer a few times, and tracks in the new snow one fall, but have never seen the cat itself. I’d sure love to get one of those game cameras.

Note the part about the dad taking on the cat with his pocket knife.
The reaction to the cougar is understandable. When animals don’t act in their normal way, there could be issues that make them dangerous. With the encroachment of people and fragmented territories cut up by roads and private property there are serious breeding and disease issues effecting these cats.
Looking at the hipster male model made me laugh. This winter, just for a change, I let the beard grow out for a month. Far from becoming a male model, the beard just reinforced the short, fat, bald, old aspect of my physical being.
“as with the drug war—people are…punished for what they own, rather than what they have done to others; it is easier for police to go after…poor neighborhoods than to search middle-class [ones]…jurors approved by prosecutors tend to believe police…over…defendants…”

SFO: You want more homeless? Build beds. Exacerbate the problem.
Irony: Cops will shoot pistols at people when other people are around but are afraid to shoot a rifle or dart gun at a cougar with no other people around.
