  • Gender fluidity — or at least the political aspect thereof — has its uses. It could save you guys some money.
  • Why it’s still okay to call people white trash according to NPR.
  • Just in case you weren’t already on “a list,” you surely are now, thanks to the TSA’s Quiet Skies program. Bovard has his usual sharp take on gov idiocy.
  • Two more good ones on the idiotic attempt to keep 3D-printed gun plans off the ‘Net. Tom Knapp notes that it’s nine attorneys general and Alyssa Milano against the First Amendment. And Trevor Burrus at Cato says it’s an attempt to ban blueprints for homemade muskets.

I really used to enjoy listening to NPR. I miss that. Lately they just seem to regularly make me mad.

Does everything? Everything? have to be about race? Any time I read the word “whiteness” I know my cerebral arteries are about to be pressure-tested.

the phrase itself reinforces some pretty insidious ideas about the meaning of whiteness (and, by reflection, blackness — we’ll get to that in a minute). By accepting the idea that white trash exists, people are tacitly accepting that there’s another, different kind of whiteness. Normal white people — the ones who aren’t white trash — embody all the things white trash can’t: They’re hard-working, educated, classy, kind and good.

Anyone who doesn’t conform to those values can’t ever really be fully white. Hence, white trash.

Matt Wray, a sociology professor at Temple University, says that if you think about the words white and trash, “you realize that they have nearly opposite meanings. ‘White’ suggesting purity, cleanliness, even the sacred. While ‘trash’ is about impurity, dirtiness and the profane.”

So let me make sure I understand. If I, a poor, sunburned, rural white man, call another person “white trash,” it’s really a slur against black people and shows what a racist I am? Pull the other one.

The article is all about race. The phrase, which I have heard uttered by poor rural whites all my life, has nothing whatever to do with race. It’s not about what you are, it’s about what you do. Trashy is as trashy does. Here’s an example of an unambiguously white trash lifestyle: http://joelsgulch.com/theres-a-phrase-for-people-like-this/

    And because I wasn’t already steaming enough…

After all — “white” is the only racial group that needs a modifier for it to become a slur. There’s no “black trash” or “Hispanic trash” or “Native American trash,” presumably, because for most of American history, those people were assumed by those in power to be poor, uneducated and criminal.

Every single word of this paragraph is a lie, including “is” and “and.” I have hung with poor blacks and poor Indians – not so much poor Hispanics – and they always and without exception discriminate according to behavior. There most certainly are “black trash” and “[indian] trash,” as designated by the decent blacks and indians. How, for god’s sake, could it be otherwise?

3D Guns… The zip files on the web remind me of that quote from Jurassic Park: “Life will find a way”

As for the TSA Quiet Skies program, thank you for posting this. It is another arrow in my quiver to be used during the inevitable arguments that arise when my wife suggests we vacation in the (not so) United States.

George Will mentions Hayek. THAT at least is eyebrow-raising. However, Trump and his Goldman-Sachs vampire swamp squids are no surprise (even if Kavanaugh perhaps is, but shouldn’t be).

Still, hearing Will try to sound like a free-market believer is a only a bit more convincing than when Hitlery does it.
