After reading the Atlantic article it became very clear to me why there is a crackdown going on now with F***b**k, Twitter, You tube, etc.

They are running real scared for good reasons.

All the way through the census article, and only vague mentions of “enumeration.” Nothing about what happened in 2010, blue states like New York lost U.S. Representatives and red states like Texas gained Representatives. That trend seems likely to continue, if not accelerate in 2020. So, yeah, I can see TPTB wanting some way to count population without really, you know, counting people.
We saw the beginning last census, with calls for “estimating the undercounting” of certain groups.

Part of the reason for phones to track their owners is the owners who demand it. If you want your phone to display local weather, it has to know where you are. If you call 9-1-1 and expect quick response, your phone needs to know where to send it. Digitally, data obtained is data stored.

Ask someone smarter and more educated, thoughtful, and civic-minded to decide on the future of your companies.
Oh, yeah. The “Right People” in charge. Where have we heard that one before? Want to “solve” the internet “problem?”
Zuckerberg et. al. should go to Congresss and say, “Look, people, read your history. You’re asking for censorship, and censorship sucks. It doesn’t make any difference whether you have humans banning content or humans writing algorithms to ban content: ‘lie’ = ‘what I disagree with’ and ‘truth’ = ‘what I agree with.’ No matter how vile, disgusting, irrelevant, erroneous, paranoiac, hateful, malevolent or violent you think the free internet is, censorship will make it worse. Always has; always will. Now, person up, and enforce the First Amendment.”

The NRA is hardly a sympathetic defendant here…
The NRA’s attorney needs to show up in court with about four hours of two-minute clips showing that “art” in movies, advertisements, and so forth, and call as witnesses the person involved in each production. Then explain Robespierre’s Law.
