… which all have to do with science, science fiction, medicine, or technology today …

  • “Open up and say ‘neigh'” — how horses can help teach young doctors to have a better bedside manner. (Tip o’ hat to ML.)
  • I thought he’d died decades ago. No, but that was his compatriot Janos Prohaska. Farewell, Ray Harryhausen, FX pioneer.
  • I’ll bet the words “dog” and “cat” were among those our prehistoric ancestors bequeathed us.
  • … Those ancestors now under the sea?
  • So, is the movie of Ender’s Game going to be good? The trailer has possibilities. But I was never a fan of the book. Sorry, Orson Scott Card; you always put me to sleep. Doesn’t look like a sleepy film, though.
  • Anybody hereabouts use Jitsi? A friend’s working on a project with it and recommended it. But I don’t do any of the things it’s noted for (online chat, video or VOIP calls), so I dunno. He says it’s got super-good encryption.

Would love to see young nurses and doctors in training do a clinical rotation at a vet or animal shelter. Much as I love horses, I think the result would be about the same if they had to deal clinically with most any sort of animal if the instructor was able to help the students actually make the connection like this man seems to be doing.

When you wrote, “have to do with science, science fiction, medicine,” I thought of this article which I read recently (a blend of all three) it just made me go, Wow.”:

Also, someone else here at BWH found an article about freedom in the Middle Ages to be of interest, that same author has another one out that is worth reading, a sort of blueprint for after SHTF perhaps:

    Merovingian Anarchy by Jonathan Goodwin

“This story is a shining light on a successful period of anarchy – not Rothbard’s anarchy, but certainly the absence of a centralized state acting as sovereign.” …

Two things that stood out for me: lending as a way to help those who are starving. And, I think I now know why they call it The Black Market and not the free market.

I use Jitsi for VOIP–I got rid of my conventional telephone years ago. It works well enough for ordinary conversations, but it doesn’t really get along with those annoying automated response systems (“press 1 for English, press 2 for Algonquin, etc.”). It supports OTR encryption for chat and ZRTP encryption for voice, both of which are well-regarded.

jc2k — I saw that excellent Stockholm Syndrome story yesterday & have been thinking about doing something with it.

Re the libertarian song list — LOL! While I’m glad to see that “Taxman” made the cut, I could add a few more. They didn’t include a single Leslie Fish filksong — and any list of libertarian songs must include “They Were Having a Sale at the Gun Store.”
