Weekend links

  • So, what do you think? Will the new corruption investigation of Hillary Clinton produce any more political courage or any better results than earlier attempts?
  • Although nobody is surprised that the DEA’s dumb decision on cannabis ignores medical reality, the linked Forbes article does a great job of showing just how far in political outerspace the DEA is.
  • Way, way, way too early to consider this news important to humans. Much more testing to be done. But an already common anti-inflammatory drug used to treat menstrual pain actually reversed Alzheimer’s symptoms in mice. Reportedly disappeared them. (Sorry for the ad and the auto-start video; guard against them with AdBlock Plus or your best available blocker.)
  • Thomas Knapp says the Libertarian Party should dump William Weld after his foolish and biased anti-gun comments (and for general lying, ignorance, and inconsistency).
  • How lotteries are designed to drain wallets for the benefit of government. Okay, but they’re still more honest than taxes.
  • Harry Potter was not the only one to use a bezoar as an antidote to poison. (But Don’t Try This At Home.)
  • Commentariat member Pat suggests we make this big news the first post at our future forums. Those who recall the old ClaireFiles Forums, now the Mental Militia forums, with its bizarrely eternal thread on the topic, will get a smile.

And a bonus. How listening to Winnie the Pooh read Darth Vader lines can scramble your brain. (H/T RG)

“…drug used to treat menstrual pain actually reversed Alzheimer’s symptoms in mice. Reportedly disappeared them.”

Wait! The mice disappeared? [Grin] Oh, ok… the symptoms. I’m having a lot of trouble understanding how they know mice have Alzheimer’s (before looking at brain tissue) and what their symptoms might be. Guess I’ll have to look at the video. 🙂

Quite a few things are happening in Alzheimer’s research. I’m watching a few of them rather closely… but I’d not seen this. Personally, I prefer the prevention approach, but I’ll add this to my list.

Sort of like removing the rust from my truck, I fear if they cure Alzheimer’s I’ll have no mind left at all.

That’s interesting, the version of your post that my RSS reader displays is missing the Weld item, not sure why it would do that unless Feedly is a hive of Libertarian Twitter-censor clones.

Worry not, RustyGunner. Well, I can’t tell you whether or not to worry about losing your mind, but your RSS reader probably picked up the post before I added the Weld item.

Strange @RustyGunner. My RSS reader (Brief) has six of the seven bullet points as well as the Winnie the Pooh bonus; it omits the dump Weld article as well.

Explanation noted, Claire. I won’t have to make a new tinfoil hat now.

No. For some reason, the Clintons are immune to the rules.

I have a tinfoil Fedora, very stylish. With a tinfoil trench coat I could really rock some Bogie tribute. Well, I’d make a much more convincing Sidney Greenstreet.

Hmmm, I wonder if there’s a prophylactic effect. If there are sufficent records, it shouldn’t be hard to discover a correlation in humans between taking mefanamic acid, and Alzheimers. Even lacking records, querying patients who do have it won’t yield much, but asking healthy elderly women who are mentally sound whether they took it could be informative. But then, I’ve read that there have been cases of people who were quite mentally “with it”, whose brains nonetheless, on autopsy, showed signs of Alzheimers. The brain is pretty amazing.

There are side effects to consider, but off-schedule use isn’t exactly rare these days. I don’t suppose anyone will be sensible enough to just give it a go? Well, the liver damage could be a real problem, especially in the elderly.

Reviving TCF? Cool. Don’t let anyone take my username, now. I’m calling dibs.

Sigh, maybe my hearing is going bad. Well, I know it’s not as good as it was, but really, I do employ protection, as I don’t want to be deaf later in life. Couldn’t understand the Pooh dialog. One of the most interesting things in the book I used to study for the General class amateur radio license was an explanation of why speech can be difficult to pick out of background noise. Described my symptoms exactly, so now I know what’s going on.

I doubt the Libertarian party will dump Weld. What does it matter anyway? They’re already damaged goods.

I recall how some derisively called Reagan the “Teflon president”. Reagan had nothing on Hillary in that regard. Barring some unforeseen serious issues, this one’s hers to lose now.

I’m beginning to think Hillary could have a stroke and end up a vegetable, and her supporters would just denounce it as a right-wing conspiracy and elect her anyway.

we’ve also seen jackpots of $429 million, $536 million and $1.586 billion.

One of the really financially stupid effects of the lottery.

You could split $1.586 billion into more than 3,000 half-million-dollar prizes, which would give a much better chance of winning and provide enough to comfortably retire on. But nearly everyone who plays the lottery will line up for the big prize.

It truly is a tax on stupid.

Since Hostess went bankrupt, and the new owner changed the recipe, the Twinkie thread at TMM has stagnated. Might I suggest “What did you do today to prepare?”

jc2k — OMG, I was just prepping a links post for tomorrow. In that link goes. For sure.

Yes, the comment-edit option is a real lifesaver, isn’t it? Or at least a face-saver, link fixer, and generally useful feature.

Still working out a few bugs on the blog overall. But thank HWFIW for getting that one right, right off the bat.

Spot on Larry. Every time I see that creature in front of the cameras I think of the movie ‘Weekend at Bernies’. The handlers and main stream media keep propping up this corpse as our candidate for prez. How much longer must we endure?
