Whoohoo! Somebody has made a video adaptation of F. Paul Wilson’s 1978 story, “Lipidleggin’.” Wilson (a physician when he’s not writing great, freedom-tinged supernatural fiction) wrote it back in the day when the fedgov insisted margarine was just the healthiest thing in the whole, wide world — which somehow makes it even more amusing now. Thanks to Jim Bovard for finding and sharing the link with me on what appears to be the very first day the video went on YouTube. And thanks to John Marc Green & Company for making it.

In light of what I wrote about earlier today, I strongly recommend that everybody — every one of us — read John Steinbeck’s short, and now almost forgotten, 1942 novel The Moon is Down. Here’s the only free copy I could find online. Not a great one. UPDATE: That indefatigable archivist, Bill St. Clair, has put a much more attractive and easily readable version online. According to commenter Woody, Bill’s version can also be ported to Kindle and other devices (if you have Caliber software). Thank you, Bill! And here it is from Amazon in Kindle, hardback, paperback, and even…
I have spent decades trying to turn political dirt into philosophic gold. I have yet to discover the alchemist’s trick, but I still have fun with the dirt. I have sometimes been mistaken for a troublemaker. My work has been publicly denounced by the director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Secretary of Agriculture, the Secretary of Labor, the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, the Postmaster General, and the chiefs of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, International Trade Commission, Drug Enforcement Administration,Agency for International Development, and Federal Emergency Management Agency. Yet, I was merely seeking to help Americans…
In 2009, her young husband was killed in an accident. After the shock of coping with the planning he and she had left undone, Chanel Reynolds started a website whose name the New York Times is too proper even to print. It’ll help you Get Your Shit Together. We have met the 1% and he is us. (H/T S) Some people have doubted that the White House can give an interesting answer to one of those WhiteHouse.gov petitions. Think again. (Via several people including S, who offers to build a Death Star for a mere $450,000,000,000,000,000.) Stealth wear anti-surveillance fashion.…
26 things that happened this year to restore your faith in humanity. (Hooray for J who dropped this into comments) How Joe Biden (accidentally, of course) helped us all have better email privacy. To everyone’s suprise, V for Vendetta (which never aired in Chinese theaters) suddenly turns up on Chinese state TV. (Tip o’ hat to JB) Officer who slaughtered helpless dog will face criminal charges. “Carpe Media.” And good going, Brian Wilson. Court rules that antiwar activists can sue government agents who spied on them. (H/T D) An unfreakinglybelievable and long overdue development: Cops who terrorized a family are…
I’m a day late discovering this, but as a Christmas present to readers, BHM is giving away “Ask Jackie” Kindle books all this week. A different title each day. Today it’s Water Bath Canning. Tomorrow Pressure Canning. Thursday Food Storage. Friday Homestead Cooking.
The first entry in our “Two Weeks of Sanity” was inspirational. Now for the practical. Not just the practical — the essential. You already know about the DIY Knoppix Thumb Drive Preparedness Project dreamed up by Mark/Greylocke. It puts 600+ preparedness documents at your fingertips — bootable on nearly any USB-capable computer. Carryable in an emergency. Great for a bug-out bag or any prepper stash. The only catch: it’s been a do-it-yourself project (and I confess, beyond the likes of me). Reader Scott said he’d like to set up a mini-business supplying ready-made KTD drives. And with Greylocke’s cooperation, he’s…
Okay, for the first entry in our two weeks of good cheer and pro-freedom usefulness — an oldie but a very goodie. —– First, some background. You can skip this if you don’t care and go right to the links at the bottom. If you were on The Claire Files Forums (now the Mental Militia Forums) seven or eight years ago, you’ll probably still remember the poster known as Shevek. Shevek was well-liked, widely considered one of the “wise men” of the forums, and is the only person I know with both a noun and a verb created in his…
You’ve heard people sneering about PETA protestors attacking society women for wearing fur but refraining from attacking outlaw bikers for wearing leather. Well … what if … (H/T MJR) Apocalyptic dog food for your best friend’s bug-out bag. “The Luxury of Anger” and how gun carriers hold themselves to a higher standard. Well said, Caleb. So where’s Bob Costas and his sanctimonious ranting now? How far off the fiscal cliff will you fall, if it comes to that? Even before the election, fans of cannabis in Washington state were worried about DUI provisions of the law that could get people…
The subject of Michael W. Dean (earlier post today) arose because Michael let me know that he and Neema Vedadi pimped our free anti-snitch book, Rats! in their recent Freedom Feens podcast, “Gentlemen, you can’t fight in here. This is the pod room. That’s not the only comment Rats! earned in the last week or so. A gentleman (I presume he’s a gentleman) named Butzy, who has some interesting background, wrote (with slight cleanup by me; I don’t think English is Butzy’s native language): Good primer. But most important, as you said but not really, do it by yourself. You…
