I went to a tea yesterday. Yes, an actual tea. For charity. With big flowery hats on the ladies. And cucumber sandwiches with the crusts cut off (which, for the record, turn out to be absolutely delicious). One woman wore a wildly purple Central American native dress and a red thrift-store hat with bangles all around that looked like a lampshade. A young acquaintance of hers died last week and she’s aware that our mutual friend J. has pancreatic cancer. To hell with it, says the lady in the bangled hat and floral-toned muumuu, who last I saw her was…
Category: Dogs and (grudgingly) cats
No description needed. Dogs are life. Cats are also necessary on the Internet.
There’s a perfectly sensible manual designed to help you deal with dogs. If you give a damn, read & heed it. We non-cops might want to see that our local PDs get copies of the thing. It would be good for everybody to see more stories like this (H/T naturegirl) and a lot fewer of these.
Of course! This is exactly what the U.S. needs: a federal government that can do more. Now why didn’t we think of that? How exactly does a “civil servant” steal $30 million from a town of 12,000? Ten completely ridiculous (and not necessarily SFW) road signs. (Tip o’ hat to C^2.) SOPA is dead. Long live CISPA! Or maybe we should say SOPA is dead; will somebody fer cryin’ out loud put a stake in its heart and bury it at the crossroads??? Does that take-away-your-passport-if-you-haven’t-paid-your-taxes law that’s making its way through Congress also give the IRS the authority to…
Cop goes to wrong house. Draws gun on innocent man. Murders man’s dog. Now friends are trying to get justice. I usually leave the puppycide blogging to Radley Balko; I can’t bear it. But this is — was — a beautiful cattle dog, and those have been so much on the blog lately. In fact, I see Balko has blogged two puppycide cases today, including this one. The other one was also a heeler mix. Well, the more this news travels, the better. Justice for Cisco. Stop the vicious coward cops. ADDED: Civil Rights Examiner article with details from someone…
Thanks to you all, the journey of Sweetie the deaf heeler continues — with each step taking her nearer to a happy forever home. I picked Sweetie up at the Portland airport two weeks ago and fostered her until Linda, a real cattle dog expert, could take her on. Today my wonderful vet and I (who were going to be traveling together anyhow) met up with Linda and transferred Sweetie into her care. Here you see this “vicious animal who can’t be trusted around dogs or strangers” greeting her new housemate Sam. I’m no expert, but in my time with…
Internet’s been down all day. Just came back up. I’m behind. So … courtesy of MJR (whose timing absolutely could not have been better), here are “13 Simple Steps to Get You Through a Rough Day.” Enjoy! And hope you get as many laughs as I did.
Your hilarious dog story of the day, courtesy of naturegirl. (Which probably would have ended up much less hilarious had American cops been the ones doing the window smashing.) And so I don’t neglect you cat people, here. It’s not funny or even particularly dramatic. Just cuuuuuuuuute. Not so cute: The U.S. standard of living has fallen more than 50 percent. Depending on how you look at it. I hope I don’t ever have to do that. Especially when I’m 80. A big hurtful, annoying EFF-U to Arizona, spoken as only Ken from Popehat can speak write. Two for the…
It’s not that fostering a dog is a full-time occupation — although dealing with the politics of a canine pack can be as consuming as (though much more honest and direct than) dealing with human politics. I have Robbie — normally the bully of the bunch, but this time remaining blessedly aloof. Clearly he believes introduction of a new female is a problem to be worked out solely by the girls. There’s Nadja. She’s low dog on the totem pole, but those few privileges she can claim for her own are hers, by damn. She’ll even head Robbie away from…
Well, yesterday was a long, grueling day for Sweetie, the deaf cattle dog. She arrived 2-1/2 hours before her flight from the east coast, was on the plane for nearly nine hours (including stopovers), then had a three-hour drive from the Portland, OR, airport in the dark and the rain. (The humans were tired, but Sweetie handled it all in style.) She’s at my house and doing well so far. Near as anyone can tell, her problem behaviors develop only after she bonds with you and decides you’re “her” human. Then she takes on the duty of “protecting” you against…
In China: rescuing dogs from the butcher. Survival Singles or doomsday dating. (Tip o’ hat to C^2) Memo to the fedgov: How not to attract tourists. The tale of Weela the lifesaving pit bull. Found this after a discussion of pit bulls came up in yesterday’s comments. It’s from quite a while back, but a wonderful story. Well. That about defines desperation. Ick. When clark mentioned in a recent comment section that a state government was about to raid small farms and slaughter their hogs, I wasn’t sure what he was talking about. But it’s pretty awful. He’s the nice,…
