Yesterday was the 100th anniversary of the income tax. Did you have a party at your house?

Posts about being frugal, getting out of debt, staying out of debt, spending practically and splurging joyfully. This category may also contain posts about hard money and what the government is doing to all that “soft money” it creates.
You remember the gutsy vendors who boycotted the Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show when its British organizers decided to appease the DiFi crowd and ban ugly guns at the last minute. The size and power of the boycott eventually got the show shut down. Now a virtual sports show just for the boycotting vendors is online. Please give them your support by buying outdoor supplies from them during this event. The sale includes a ton of stuff — archery equipment, boats, outdoor clothing, power sports equipment, gun gear (of course), taxidermy, guide services, food, log homes, and more. The virtual…
Yet another example of “I’m from the government and I’m here to help you.” (Tip o’ hat to G, who was absolutely fulminating over this.) How do you have meaningful due process when everything is a crime? Glenn Reynolds answers in “Ham Sandwich Nation.” (Per J.) Everybody knows about the infamous “no-fly” list. But did you have any idea there’s also a “no-credit” list you can end up on if you happen to share the name of a suspected drug dealer, money launderer, etc.? And of course … it’s secret and you can’t appeal. Ah, the wonderful Land of the…

Hey, the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals says it’s okay to flip off a cop. Not necessarily smart, but okay. You can tell the nice officer that between taser zaps. (H/T to JW for the good news.) And speaking of police: Rapid DNA: a new tool coming soon to a thug near you. (H/T to J for the bad news.) Oh, c’mon. Did somebody in Congress really tell off Freedom Feens? Nawwwww. Really? It’s true Congressional staffers have committed some pro-government vandalizing at Wikipedia, so who knows? Well, that’s one way to get your stolen cellphone back. A French court…
I’ve de-stickified my Christmas wish post because … well, I’ve got more than my share already, thanks to you. For the rest of the year, here’s a better cause. Blogster extraordinaire and crotchety, fiercely independent desert hermit Joel has, as you may know, advanced glaucoma (and more about that). He also has about $1.98 to his name. But. Thanks to Landlady (aka Debra), he’s finally got a PayPal donation button at the top of his blog. So if you want to help Joel keep what little eyesight he has left so he can stay out there in the desert and…
You’ve heard people sneering about PETA protestors attacking society women for wearing fur but refraining from attacking outlaw bikers for wearing leather. Well … what if … (H/T MJR) Apocalyptic dog food for your best friend’s bug-out bag. “The Luxury of Anger” and how gun carriers hold themselves to a higher standard. Well said, Caleb. So where’s Bob Costas and his sanctimonious ranting now? How far off the fiscal cliff will you fall, if it comes to that? Even before the election, fans of cannabis in Washington state were worried about DUI provisions of the law that could get people…
If you’ve ever sent me anything from Amazon.com, please do me a favor. Right now, while you’re thinking of it, go and delete me from your Amazon address book.* This is important. Amazon just denied me one of the biggest single commissions I would ever have received. Their reason? As boilerplated by someone signing itself David T: I found some of the items, including the [expensive item in question], listed in your account’s Orders Report were flagged by our system as ineligible for Associates advertising fees. Due to the proprietary nature of the way we make these determinations, we can’t…
So. The county recently had a sale on properties foreclosed for non-payment of taxes. I’ve never paid attention to such things before, considering any form of tax sale or asset-forfeiture sale to be out of moral bounds. This time somebody pointed out that two of the parcels up for sale were hilltop acreages near the end of winding dirt roads. Not far from this neighborhood in miles, but a world away in possibilities. I went so far as to look them up online and do some sighing over them. Of course I didn’t consider bidding. But I admit that was…
