Enemies

I’ve been trying to return to Saturday’s theme. My aim: to celebrate a few great, inspirational reasons not to be afraid — to be hopeful. I intended to write about how “these are the times that try men’s souls”, but how they are also times of great creative defiance. But as I try to write about those reasons, I find post after abortive post going in a different direction. Not because the reasons to be hopeful don’t exist, but because they all lead to a conclusion I don’t want to conclude. It’s not a new conclusion. Others have reached it…

Tuesday links

You know how the FBI and DHS have been broadening … and broadening … and broadening … the definition of “domestic terrorists” for all these years? Well, now Esteemed Senator Mr. Lautenberg and company want to bring us the logical culmination of that. Let the AttyGen arbitrarily deny firearms to anybody who fits the one-size-fits-all definition. Due process? Does anybody in the fedgov remember due process? Or is it now purely “we do it, so it’s the process”? (H/T WL) Well whodathunkit. Tina Turner is Swiss. Woot! Seattle gun collectors turn a police gun buyback into a free-market curbside gun…

Yet another example of “I’m from the government and I’m here to help you.” (Tip o’ hat to G, who was absolutely fulminating over this.) How do you have meaningful due process when everything is a crime? Glenn Reynolds answers in “Ham Sandwich Nation.” (Per J.) Everybody knows about the infamous “no-fly” list. But did you have any idea there’s also a “no-credit” list you can end up on if you happen to share the name of a suspected drug dealer, money launderer, etc.? And of course … it’s secret and you can’t appeal. Ah, the wonderful Land of the…

Obama and his disarmament wishlist

Everybody — everyblogger — is supposed to make some comment on Obama’s anti-gun announcement today. I’ve been thinking about it and here’s mine: I don’t care. It doesn’t matter whether he called for outright confication (he didn’t; not yet) or whether he actually wussed out under “conservative” pressure. (H/T D for the link even if I don’t buy its nice, hopeful content.) Yeah, it kinda ticks me off that the Washington Post, which surely knows better, calls some of Obama’s most facile propaganda (page two of this Post artitorial) a “Constitutional argument.” Constitutional argument my Aunt Fanny; Obama’s remarks about…

Welcome to The Hunger Games “Lite”

“Hunger Games ‘Lite’” = USA ca. 2013. And “I prefer not to.” This multi-part post by Todd at Survival Sherpa is an important read. That would be true even if it didn’t also plug Rats!, the FREE anti-snitch book. (Thank you for that, Todd. And thank you, D, for the find.) —– I attended a local preparedness fair over the weekend. It was, to say the least, sparsely attended. There was a smattering of people there when it opened. But by 1:00, when I returned to attend a presentation on preparedness for pets, the exhibitors had been reduced to browsing…

Executive order on firearms: what are they thinking?

The part of me that still believes the civics lessons I learned in school wonders what Obama and cronies think they can accomplish with an executive order about firearms. Because of course, no EO restricting gun ownership or sales in any way would be constitutional. Not even remotely. The older, wiser, large part of me remembers that EOs have been used to tighten the noose around guns before. And, of course, used for even worse things. Ironically, our best hope is that they’ll go too far, too fast — and make the line in the sand very clear. Any thoughts…

Tuesday links, a cute cat video, followed by vigorous cussing at WordPress

Hey, the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals says it’s okay to flip off a cop. Not necessarily smart, but okay. You can tell the nice officer that between taser zaps. (H/T to JW for the good news.) And speaking of police: Rapid DNA: a new tool coming soon to a thug near you. (H/T to J for the bad news.) Oh, c’mon. Did somebody in Congress really tell off Freedom Feens? Nawwwww. Really? It’s true Congressional staffers have committed some pro-government vandalizing at Wikipedia, so who knows? Well, that’s one way to get your stolen cellphone back. A French court…

Monday links and musings

Thanks for continuing to put up with the “lite” posting. Posting will probably be on-and-off all this week but should be back to normal by next Monday. —– Mark/Greylocke, the guy who brought us the Knoppix Thumb Drive preparedness document project, is now putting together a YouTube channel for survival/preparedness info. He’s inviting your contributions. If you have a knowledge or skill you want to share but don’t have the ability to edit your own video, he’ll even do that for you from your raw footage. —– I received my own KTD the other day via Scott’s ready-made drive business.…

Holiday weekend good news roundup, part I

26 things that happened this year to restore your faith in humanity. (Hooray for J who dropped this into comments) How Joe Biden (accidentally, of course) helped us all have better email privacy. To everyone’s suprise, V for Vendetta (which never aired in Chinese theaters) suddenly turns up on Chinese state TV. (Tip o’ hat to JB) Officer who slaughtered helpless dog will face criminal charges. “Carpe Media.” And good going, Brian Wilson. Court rules that antiwar activists can sue government agents who spied on them. (H/T D) An unfreakinglybelievable and long overdue development: Cops who terrorized a family are…

Project: How to hide a gun

Yes, it’s that time of year life politics again — time to consider that we might need to hide our Eeeevil Black Rifles, just like we did back in the Bad Old Clinton days. Yes, I know some of us are going to say, “Hide? I ain’t hidin’ nothin’! They can come and take my gun from my cold, dead hands — or better yet, they’re the ones who’ll end up cold and dead.” But we’re taking insurance here. Not the whole arsenal. Just an “ace in the hole” rifle. Or some high-cap magazines. Or an Eeeevil Black Pistol. Or…
