Paul Bonneau dropped this astonishing video link into comments. It deserves a post of its own. ¡Viva General Vivas! ¡Viva la resistencia!*
* I hope that actually says something meaningful in Spanish — which I don’t actually speak. Never can quite be sure whether “la resistencia” might actually just be a property of electricity, or maybe a cuss word, rather than what I think it means.
“la resistencia” is both a property of electricity and what you think it means. Just like in English 🙂
Whew. Jorge. Thank you. I was hoping you’d chime in — and hoping even more that it wouldn’t be to announce that I’m una gringa estupida!
Off topic, but I just started reading “A Widow’s Walk Off-Grid to Self-Reliance: An inspiring, true story of Courage and Determination” by Anne Dodds on my iPad… and wow, just started and what a great mention of you Claire!
I think I’ll really like this book!
Glad BHM posted it in the newsletter.
Ragnar — I just received a review copy of that yesterday! And yeah (blush!) I saw the mention of me. At first, because I’m so non-religious, I thought I wasn’t going to be able to relate to a lot of what Annie Dodds had to say. But as soon as she got dropped off at the old house, also knew I was going to like it. Very much looking forward to reading more.
Bummer, the Amazon sample was just the 1st 19 pages… I’ll have to wait till the book gets here on Tuesday to finish.
I also learned today that if I had been using a Kindle instead of an iPad, I could have “borrowed” the book for free since I have the Amazon Prime membership… but regardless, from what I’ve read, this is one I want as a hard-copy.
I don’t know anything about Vivas; this is the first I heard of him. But it struck me that we might be seeing scenes very much like this in America pretty soon.
I was looking at the Wikipedia entry for Maduro, who sounds like a Chavez retread. Here are a couple of quotes:
“One of the first important presidential programs of Nicolas Maduro became the “Safe Homeland” program, a massive police and military campaign to build security in the country.”
“On 24 October, he announced the creation of a new agency, the Vice Ministry of Supreme Happiness, to coordinate all the social programmes.”
Great name, eh? This video was posted over on the Free State Wyoming forum.
I have trouble remembering where I found links, but I had forwarded this one to some people http://caracaschronicles.com/2014/02/20/the-game-changed/
I think it’s interesting that TPTB haven’t come down hard on his neighborhood. They may think they don’t have enough power yet to handle the negative response they might get from the Venezuelan people.
It’s so difficult to tell how it will go here. Right now, I tend to think that our central government would be terminating this situation fairly quickly.
“Throughout last night, panicked people told their stories of state-sponsored paramilitaries on motorcycles roaming middle class neighborhoods, shooting at people and storming into apartment buildings, shooting at anyone who seemed like he might be protesting.”
Yeah, I remember reading a little about that a while ago. This statement certainly explains why the general was advising people to use wire barricades; wire is unfriendly to motorcycle riders. I actually ran into a wire myself on the farm a while ago; it knocked me off my bike and I have a scar around my neck to remind me.
I guess they need more guns in Venezuela so they can shoot back at the bastards.
“Vice Ministry of Supreme Happiness”
That paints all kinds of interesting pictures.

Arriba los insurgentos!
