  • Today the trial begins. A group of Asians is suing Harvard for racial discrimination in admissions. Some supporters of affirmative action have persuaded themselves that this is white supremacy in action.
  • Another powerful expose of drug war cruelty and corruption by Radley Balko.
  • Scott Greenfield takes down the notion that we need two new states. (Hey, if they get DC and Puerto Rico, we should get Jefferson, at the very least. There’s an official movement.)
  • Found this at Wendy’s place. Doesn’t it seem to you that this program to educate sub-prime homebuyers and get them into low-interest mortgages would be a whole lot more effective if they required the candidates to save up for at least minimal down payments? You know, to demonstrate that they’ve actually learned something and can also afford ownership and maintenance?
  • What really kills you is …
  • Dogs and their people finding each other in the wake of devastating tornadoes. A couple of cats, too. (H/T Shel)

Hmm… They’d need a constitutional amendment to make DC a state.

That’s no problem. It can go right along with that constitutional amendment they want for term-limiting the Supreme Court now that it’s too loaded with conservatives. And that constitutional amendment they want for abolishing the Dead White Male Slave-Owning electoral college.

(You know, these guys really weren’t paying attention to the process when it was discussed in civics class …)

Its been a while since I’ve been to their website, but I’m surprised that the SOJ movement doesn’t include the Oregon counties any more. XX Gold Pans are by far the most widely seen bumper stickers seen here on the south coast, I know the movement didn’t die.
One of the reasons I moved here was the 6’x 6′ signs of the Great Seal that alert visitors that they are indeed in Jefferson. Still just a state of mind, it’s ideals and ethos runs deep here.

The electoral college has to go. The First Amendment needs to be changed to prohibit hate speech. The Supreme Court needs term limits or, in the alternative, to be packed with the right sort of justices. And now we need two new states.
Whine, whine, whine. These folks’ Mamas didn’t teach them to be good losers, or good winners, or about taking turns.

Hey, if they get DC and Puerto Rico, we should get Jefferson, at the very least.
I’d rather have Guam. The native population trends Hispanic/Oriental, but a boatload of the voters are Navy.

Fun Fact: The U.S. actually has 16 territories: American Samoa, Bajo Nuevo Bank, Baker Island, Howland Island, Guam, Jarvis Island, Johnston Atoll, Kingman Reef, Midway Islands, Navassa Island, Northern Mariana Islands, Palmyra Atoll, Puerto Rico, Serranilla Bank, U.S. Virgin Islands, and Wake Island.
Five of them, American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and U.S. Virgin Islands have permanent non-military populations.

In order to maintain balance and get votes for the whole thing:
    Puerto Rico (+2 D)
NY split into 6 ( NY + Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx, and Staten Island ) (+8 D)
North CA and South OR split into: Jefferson (+2 R)
WA Split Into WA and West WA (+2 R)
IL split into North IL and South IL (+2 R)
and then one of NV OH PA NC VA CO split to get another (+2 R).

That would create two new options for free living on the west coast, one or two in the middle, and one on the east coast.

Good post on Dogs Meet Owners After Tornadoes but hard to watch without getting blurry eyed.
