The precariat. It’s apparently the social class I’ve belonged to nearly all my adult life. In the growing American class war, it is a growing class. The precariat: Those who freelance or otherwise work without traditional benefits or even minimal assurances of security. Those who live precariously.

Meet Twitter’s new thought police. Incredible (but not surprising in this anti-free speech day) that a company that lives or dies on the quality of its public forum of ideas would do this. Your brain: it may work better in winter. Now my brain, on the other hand … Bernie-ites! You want socialism? Here’s socialism. “Media Matters Not.” The big “progressive watchdog” goes after the little old Zelman Partisans, distorting all the way. Bear Bussjaeger says thanks. Narcissism. And speaking of which: Hillary. (This is actually pretty funny.) The Robin Hood of science is pulling scientific papers from behind paywalls…
I’ll tell you right off that nothing dramatic happened. But it was interesting. I’ve been working my way up to making my quarterly stop at the town liquor store. Today was the day for me to buy my Bloody Mary vodka. But as I pulled up at the curb in Old Blue, a black-clad, hooded young man wearing a backpack stepped inside the shop. Something about him caused my hackles to rise. I nearly drove off. Then I thought about Deana (not her real name), who owns the pocket-sized liquor store. A young woman in there all alone. I got…
The deeper story on those undemocratic superdelegates supporting Hillary. And the background on how superdelegates came to be. Electorally, the big question is will the dogs eat it? (Given that dogs will eat both vomit and sh*t, maybe they will.) OTOH, the backlash has begun. Michelle Alexander writes in The Nation that Clinton doesn’t deserve the black vote that the media considers so inevitable for her. The new frontier of negative interest rates. You know, if I didn’t realize this stuff is for real, I’d think articles like this one were parodies. Or bizarre fantasies. Oh, the weird world of…
Millennials don’t yet realize how fully the political system is rigged. (H/T Shel and jed in comments) Pop-Up House.. Low cost, quick build, pretty cool. But why when they tout these things do they always act as if plumbing, electrical work, and site prep don’t exist? “Are Pets Really Good for Us?” Heck, yeah! … as long as we don’t trip over them or become social outcasts. Well, this is depressing. Fear of punishment from a vengeful god turns out to produce social good. Not surprising, really. That’s probably why vengeful gods were invented (by those who wanted to define…
Maybe you have some candidate you’re passionate to support. Or maybe your sole goal this election season is merely to (somehow, against all odds) remain sane until November. Or you simply want to minimize your exposure to the endless media noise. I don’t know. But even if you try to tune out electoral politics, I suspect there’s still something you want out of this election above all else. For me (I just realized), my main interest in watching this circus is to see Hillary Clinton take a well-deserved fall from the high-wire of “inevitability.” When she tumbled in 2008, the…
You and I both know there are a lot of reasons not to vote for Bernie Sanders. But it never occurred to me that fear of burning in hell was one of them. More madness in gender feminism? Or just desperation in Hillaryland? And speaking of madness, if you have to fight and maneuver to keep people from seeing babies in ultrasound images, you’re really not too secure in your pro-choice beliefs, are you? Gutsy wife crashes her own funeral, shocking the heck out of the “grieving” husband who’d paid to have her murdered. A new look at the State…
I finally finished a good first draft of that cannabis article and got it sent off to 10 people so they could check the parts about them and offer corrections on anything else they spot. Already heard back from three. Not a single change requested or goof noted. That’s unusual. It won’t hold for all 10, but very nice start. The interviewees range from a police chief to a couple whose medical dispensary was destroyed by the DEA. And here they are, all in harmony, even as they come from such different perspectives. I simply can’t stress enough what a…
They don’t have a government right now and they’re unhappy about it. (H/T MJR) No matter how outlandish the halftime shows get they’ve been worse. A lot worse. The pick-up truck era of warfare. This guy does a number on telemarketers. Oh yes, definitely be on the lookout for scary anti-government types. As if the cone of shame weren’t bad enough already. (H/T GL)
