Reader just waiting put me on the Memory Lane Express. A link to Sean Gabb’s retrospective on the late, great Loompanics led him to take his copy of Loomps’ 2005 catalog off the shelf, where he discovered an old article of mine: “Dark Satanic Cubicles.” I didn’t remember it. Only vaguely recalled the title. But it sounded brilliant. 🙂 Took quite a bit of hunting to find. Had to go through some interesting byways. But here it is: imperfectly archived on the old Loompanics site. just waiting also sent me .jpg copies (thank you), from which come the stark Nick…

All things creative. All things beautiful, profound, and moving.
A good friend of mine (and of this blog and of dogs) is also a fan of Animusic. Several years ago he sent me their first two DVDs. Even though I’m as sadly non-musical as it gets, I found them awesome. Now Animusic is crowdsourcing funding for DVD number three and they are alllllllmost over the top. Check ’em out and if you can give their fundraising a little kick via Kickstarter, great. If you can’t or don’t want to contribute, how about spreading the word to any music fans or computer animation geeks you know? One more week to…
For your edification entertainment and h-wording pleasure, here’s a post all about dogs and funny stuff. Pit bull adopts lion cub. Marines’ top dog, Chesty, gets a promotion after dissing Panetta’s pooch. (This one’s for a young friend of the blog who’s currently at Twenty-Nine Palms getting his butt shot off via CAX) Boy wants to give his dying service dog a taste of the world. Well (farggle) that! (H/T PT) “Four-legged reason to keep it together.” (Tip o’ hat to Jim Bovard.) Barkour! (H/T Jim B.) Finally, you heard this week about the octagenarian woman who, with the best…
Your contribution can help a starving writer/crafter (no, not me) write his next novel and develop a novel new idea involving handmade papers and seeds. I’m talking about Carl-Bear Bussjaeger, long-time freedomista, who explains it all at that link. Once he reaches his goal, 50% of all further contributions will go to three named charities — one for animals, one for guns, one for kids. Even if you can’t contribute, please spread the word via your blog, your Facebook page, or any appropriate forums and listservs.
Deadlining has been a bitch the last few weeks. Oh, don’t get me wrong; I’m thrilled to have the work and the people I’m doing it for couldn’t be better. But every time I’ve seen that proverbial light at the end of the tunnel, it really has turned out to be an oncoming train — or at least another assignment. Just one more to go now, so I thought I’d take today off, put my feet up, relax, and (once my brain cleared) catch up on blogging. The weatherperson said today would be pleasant and instead it turned out downright…
That waitress who naively turned her $12k tip over to the cops? She’s getting her money back despite police claims that the cash … um, yeah, um … “smells like marijuana so we have to keep it, you know, for your own good.” (Amazing how self-congratulatory the jerks manage to be even after the whole country beat up on them for stealing from the poor woman.) Oh, Arizona, the silliness of your legislators never ends, does it? Now they’re trying to declare that you can be pregnant up to two weeks before having sex. Too late! Too late! You missed…
Legally blind and a successful photographer. Now here’s a growing profession for you: consultants who coach white-collar criminals on how to get along in prison. The sagebrush rebellion rises again. Brothels. They’re now legal in Ontario, Canada. And for some pretty good reasons. “When we were making V we thought the mask might be popular at parties.” And yet another intriguing trailer for Silver Circle. The coins are real; you can buy them from the movie’s store and Ron Paul was photographed last month using one to make a point.
Here’s an aspect of the dreadful FATCA that hasn’t gotten much coverage. From jed in comments: homeless by choice (and on principle). “How to Be Creative.” I don’t buy the claim that there’s no such thing as “creative types” (OMG, there are indeed creative types). But the rest is surely true. Creativity isn’t just for artists, writers, and inventors. Neat idea: an urban food forest. Not quite sure, though, how “free” it can be. A U.S. government soldier decides to freelance. (ADDED: The story that it was one “lone nut” “going rogue” probably isn’t going to hold up.) “Gaining Respect…
Source. (Via Becky Chandler’s Twitter feed.) And yeah, yeah. Don’t tell me. You, my fine readers, don’t ask.
While we’re just goofing around on a rainy Sunday … And speaking of rain, it’s often said that in the NorthWET climate, if you stand still too long, you’ll grow moss on your north side. In recognition of that, here’s a recipe for making moss graffiti. Really. Moss graffiti. Both these finds are courtesy of S, who must have been in an unusually unserious mood. —– Here’s another unintentional laugh from the NorthWET. Nothing to do with the climate this time; this one comes from government (that endless source of snorts and giggles). A reader writes to say: The other…
