There’s one deadly sin that we do less as we age, says the WaPost. Actually, I can think of several. But the article is still a nice reminder that getting old has its great benefits. MamaLiberty tests 9mm ammo. OTOH, while 9mm is emerging as the clear favorite in TZP’s current poll, Mike Vanderboegh offers a rather compelling, if strictly empirical, argument on why .45 ACP is “better.” (Great link to ballistics tests, too.) The Blackphone2: “not recommended at this time” for paranoid patriots. So typical. So very, very, very typical. That crooked cop who staged his own “murder” had…
Category: Dogs and (grudgingly) cats
No description needed. Dogs are life. Cats are also necessary on the Internet.
Must get a few things done this morning, then will return to the “musings” I began the other day. Meantime, here’s some linkage … Never thought I’d see it, but here’s one pot-legalization initiative I hope falls on its corrupt, crony-capitalist face. What goes around comes around. Amazon is opening its first physical book store. The best cities for surviving the zombie apocalypse. Feel free to disagree. Is the USDA silencing scientists? Love (in a not-so-loving way) Conquest’s third law of politics. A happy (though also mysterious) dog tale via Shel in comments.
Back to the “musings” shortly. In the meantime, I must beat back the tide of open tabs … “If bacon is so bad, I don’t want to live.” Leisl Schillinger is lying about that. She wants to live — and live boundlessly well. Wil Wheaton is right!. The growing trend to expect creative people to work for free, even for large, wealthy organizations, is insane and it’s destroying us. Okay, I know it’s a few days late, but these two really are the best Halloween costumes “We need more movies like Steve Jobs so long as they’re not like Steve…
Cop shoots murder victim’s mother in the leg; misses dog. EU Parliament votes to protect Snowden against U.S. extradition. Reforming school policing. While The Atlantic fails to ask some basic questions, its heart is definitely in the right place. It’s all part of the school-to-prison pipeline. And good old “zero tolerance.” 🙂 Everything you need for household repairs. Cannabis fights liver cancer. I’m not sure why even some good, aware people continue to be surprised that there is no justice from the Department of Justice.
Or did the gods invent Mondays in the first place just to spite us? Winter arrived yesterday evening and today we took our first dogwalk in it. That is, I stomped along determinedly while the dogs, in their rain jackets, stared at me aghast and demanded, “Can we go home now?” While winter here in the NorthWET doesn’t involve six-foot drifts of snow or 30-below temperatures (ah, fond memories of Wyoming and Minnesota!), it tends to arrive as suddenly as if someone up there dropped it on our heads. Cold needles of rain are here to stay. —– And of…
A reader emailed about this encounter: Just had a hair raising close call here. One of my neighbors has two very large German Shepherd dogs. He lets them run loose when he is with them and they never seemed to be a problem until today. I carried my 9mm carbine down to the fence along the road today because those two dogs were chasing one of the horses just across the road from me. He was kicking at the dogs, and darn near nailed one too. The dogs didn’t seem to be trying to bring the pony down, but they…
“Mommy, am I going to die?” Cop shoots four-year-old after he showed up to “help” her injured mother. Clearly all in a day’s work for this callous dude. Missed the family dog, though. Drone defense on a budget. “I want one,” says MJR, who sent the link. White House aide shoots at her cop boyfriend. Much has been made of the fact that this babe is a “special” assistant to Obama, but apparently in WH parlance, “special” is as in “rides the short bus.” Barfetta Barvetta Singletary. Don’t ever ask that woman out on a date. Per Shel in comments,…
Before I get to the linkage — good luck to all you on the east coast, especially from the Carolinas to New Jersey. Keep to high ground and away from the surf and flooded roads, please. We need to keep you guys around! The Freeholder was caught in some of the early storm action and has some thoughts on bugging out when you’re … already out. Four of the best comments on the Oregon campus shooting. Google has apparently realized that “don’t be evil” long ago quit applying to them anyhow. The human quest to find our place in the…
An anxious space geek makes good in Hollywood. It’s just common sense that you should be free to shoot illegal home invaders. No matter who employs them. Even when they are “legal” they are still sometimes scum who should not be welcomed in anything that calls itself a civilization. While it’s not as unique as this article implies, the Anevay Frontier Stove looks like cool beans for preppers, campers, and small-house dwellers. Doctor punches out pesky (and phony) ER patient. (I wonder if Japan has laws like ours that forbid doctors to turn anyone away from the ER.) Do not…
Glorious day. Seventy-five degrees under a blue sky, but still a distinct feel of fall. Our walks in the woods have been short and halting since May — first because of my ankle and increasingly because Robbie’s getting so old. I walk a little bit, slowly, while Ava runs ahead. Then I stop to wait for the old boy. Not to wait for him to catch up, but just to come into sight. He’s fine on the familiar old roads with their high banks of berry bramble; can’t wander off and get lost. But he’s good for only a few…
