Okay, here we go. This will be the penultimate Amazon Christmas shopping list. It’s about pets and other animals. And this one’s not strictly Amazon. If you or anybody on your gift list is looking for information on raising chickens, goats, rabbits, or any farm animals the place to go is the Backwoods Home Book Store. You’ll find livestock books under multiple categories, including Animals & Pets, Food Production, and Self-Sufficiency. I have NFI in BHM Book Store sales (except for two books I wrote). But without BHM, this blog wouldn’t exist. They’re good people. —– Now on to Amazon…
Category: Dogs and (grudgingly) cats
No description needed. Dogs are life. Cats are also necessary on the Internet.
The warm, fuzzy (literally!) face of the police state. (H/T Jim Bovard) China finally going to stop stockpiling US dollars? You already know this, don’t you? Nevertheless, it never hurts to be reminded of the four magic statements to make to the police when you’re stopped and they want to poke around and see what they might be able to pin on you. Mostly for the nerds hereabouts: Rethinking cloud storage (and in particular, rethinking SpiderOak). “Security and privacy: Experts connect the dots as debate rages.” (Tip o’ hat to MJR) Via the Infamous Oregon Law Hobbit: The Skunk Party…
Source and H/T to Brian Wilson. NOTE: “Dog Goldberg” is delightful. But please don’t even think about feeding your dog Beneful until you’ve done your research! Some of the owner claims may be unfounded, but really, the ingredients barely qualify as food. It’s shocking that Beneful is marketed as healthy.
Hooray! The Kickstarter campaign to fund Puppycide: The Documentary has relaunched! Last time, they drew more than $60,000 in pledges from nearly 1,000 supporters. But their goal was $100,000 and Kickstarter is all-or-nothing. Now they’ve named a more modest goal: $40,000, with the aim of making a 30-minute film instead of full-length feature. The donors are already rushing back, and I’ve rushed with ’em. It appears that supporters are pledging more than before. If you pledged during the last effort, I hope you’ll have another go.
‘Nother reason to eat a nuts-n-berries diet. Or at least nuts, anyhow. Beaver steals gun. Chortle. One more v*te for shutting down Obamacare. This one from cybersecurity mavens. In the meantime, assuming you can buy insurance at all, maybe you can get it for free! It seems that the U.S. is developing a kind of ideal income level where you can a) live reasonably well while b) maximizing your tax-provided benefits. Millions more will surely aim for this welfare-state version of “success.” Cockapoo nation! But some proud traditionalists will not go happily into that EZ future. Anybody could have predicted…
The fourth shock wave of ObamaCare is about to strike And even Obama’s hometown paper says, “Stop digging, start over.” The Dallas Buyers Club is in my Netflix queue for sure. From everything I’ve read or heard, it’s a spectacular indictment of big government (specifically the death-dealing FDA) and a celebration of Outlaw entrepreneurism. That it stars Matthew McConaughey is merely a plus. Another long-time outdoors writer and sportsman who’s shocked to learn that laws passed against eeeeeeevvil gun owners also — oops! — apply to him. (H/T to LA) “Can’t we all just get along?” “Well, ah, no.” Mike…
Okay, here’s a bonus set of Amazon holiday links, just because I find this weirdly funny. Since going (um … mostly) primal, I’ve developed a jones for maple-cured bacon. This being a pricey item at the local grocer, I checked to see what Amazon had. I laughed to discover how many maple-bacon products there are. Very few of them involving any actual bacon. Then during my seashore excursion last week, I delved into bins of salt-water taffy (you see what I mean about “mostly” primal). Amidst the traditional flavors, there it was: maple-bacon taffy. Curious, but with an inward eeeeeew,…
Sadly, it looks as if it’s going to take a miracle to get the Puppycide documentary Kickstarter campaign to its goal. They’ve gotten some strong support — just not enough of it. I received an email update from them today saying that anybody who donates $150 or more will now get all of these items: – This Just Announced Hoodie – Signed Movie Poster – Bandana and Frisbee – DVD of finished film – Bumper sticker – Digital download of the finished film – And campaign updates I’m going to up my contribution. If they don’t make goal, nobody pays…
Radley Balko has finally written about the “Puppycide” Kickstarter campaign. And — no surprise, given his history of defending dogs against thuggery — he’s already involved with the project. Hope being on HuffPost gives the campaign a huge boost! (Thanks, Ragnar, for the find.)
Working on one of those blogs that takes Actual Thought. In the meantime, have some Halloween dogs. Many more at the link above.
