Category: Dogs and (grudgingly) cats

No description needed. Dogs are life. Cats are also necessary on the Internet.

… and thank you!

“All mine?” asks Ava. “Nope,” sez I. A heaping plenty of it is mine. 🙂 The only problem with all these delights (and more to come, according to my Amazon wish list!) is that I’m not certain whom to thank, since several gifts came with no “from” at all. So thank you MSJ, MJR, BL, ST, KK, A, and furrydoc. And you, too, mystery Santas. Care to come through in the comments and let me know who you are? More thanks to the Duffys and the rest of the BHM crew and Rich Lucibella, Denny Hansen, and the friendly folks…

Friday miscellany

J.D. Tuccille’s High Desert Barbecue gets a sterling review from Britain’s Sean Gabb. Well, here’s a cheery thought about the current economic mess. Probably true, too. Encouraging sites to offer PayPal alternatives. Good idea. Be sure to follow the links to the PayPal (or PayPal/fedgov) horror stories. Who knew that SF writer George R.R. Martin is a terrorist? Jim Bovard exposes the post office. News from Dave’s blog: Backwoods Home is now on Kindle. The headline on this one was (of course), “It’s not what it looks like! I can explain!”

Wednesday miscellany

Paul Allen and Burt Rutan have done it again. Whoohoo! We might make it seriously into space despite the government’s worst efforts. (Tip o’ hat to PT.) I don’t know what Cadbury Schwepps has to do with dogs in cars. But this is a thing of beauty. (And here are more dogs in cars in slow-motion if you liked that.) So. Why wasn’t the police officer charged with reckless endangerment or discharging a firearm in a somewhat inopportune place or …? Ron Paul overtaking Gingrich in Iowa? Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy. Speaking of Newt, didn’t you think it…

Monday musings

I have to go to court today. No, nothing I did. Just giving support to a friend whose ne’er-do-well son is in trouble again. Going through my fanny pack to make sure I’m courthouse-ready. You know, it’s amazing the amount of stuff folks carry every day that some other folks might consider a weapon. I’ll probably just stash the fanny pack and put keys, cash, and ID in a pocket lest some letter opener or multitool freak out the paranoiati. —– I’ve got two multi-tabbed browsers full of links I’ve been saving for you. But between revelations of Fed shenanigans…

Former Seattle police chief knows from experience: cops are blowing it in their handling of OWS. (Tip o’ hat to C^2.) Family reluctantly surrenders its beloved island. I give you one guess as to why. I know you can tell me without even clicking on the link. My dogs could do this. I’m two weeks late learning this. So sad. Diaspora* is a great and hopeful creation. Now here’s a perfect example of how one man’s safe-haven is another person’s nightmare. Joel Skousen has named Tennessee as the best retreat location for people living east of the Mississippi. That’s this…

Life in prison for cutting off beards? Ridiculous law gets more ridiculous by the minute. And not only in Feddieland. (Money quote is in the final paragraph.) Terrorist entrapments are getting pretty desperate, too. But get the gummint out of the way and people still do amazingly cool things. Speaking of dogs, here’s another awwwww moment. The tidbit about the crucifix chain is what’s interesting here. Hm. Might hit the pawnshops and second-hand stores for that little bit of preparedness. What George Orwell can teach us about police brutality. Polar Pure water treatment and the drug war. I agree with…

Midweek miscellany

Still deadlining. Oy. But I’m beginning to believe that the light I see at the end of that tunnel might not be an onrushing train. This weekend I’m going to collapse in a happy heap. Meanwhile, the news … “Penn Jillette’s 10 commandments for atheists.” I’m neither an atheist nor a fan of commandments. Still, these are pretty good. (Tip o’ hat to PT.) Can any of you techno-hackers tell me if this might work at a distance of 50 yards or so? I’ve had this little problem … Six things nobody will tell you about MF Global. I mean,…

Riot dog

You may have heard about the famous riot dog that’s become a symbol of Greek resistance (or Greek mayhem, depending on your point of view). Well, check out these photos. And this being Halloween, be sure to check out the very last one on the linked page. I’m surprised cops haven’t puppycided him yet.

The road from self-reliance to self-pity. Whole gangs of “constitutional sheriffs” in Northern California? Wonders never cease. (Too bad this intriguing article never gets around to mentioning the very important state of Jefferson.) Via Wendy McElroy: You’ll never believe the latest group the FBI considers a threat. (I’m going to have to create a new topic category for Stupidity Above And Beyond the Call of Even the Government.) While I don’t agree with this writer’s snarky take on Occupy Wall Street, it sure does seem some young lefties are learning some real-life lessons. Including one right out of Atlas Shrugged.…
