Evil

I’d like to believe that murdering a room full of kindergarteners a few days before Christmas is a great an evil as human beings are capable of. I want to feel sympathy, and empathy, for the poor children, their parents, their schoolmates, and everyone harmed by the bastard who did this thing. I’m glad he’s dead. I wish his evil could be buried with him — and a stake driven through its heart. But we all know that a greater evil is very much alive — and filled with glee. We all know there’s worse to come. And it’s going…

You’ve heard people sneering about PETA protestors attacking society women for wearing fur but refraining from attacking outlaw bikers for wearing leather. Well … what if … (H/T MJR) Apocalyptic dog food for your best friend’s bug-out bag. “The Luxury of Anger” and how gun carriers hold themselves to a higher standard. Well said, Caleb. So where’s Bob Costas and his sanctimonious ranting now? How far off the fiscal cliff will you fall, if it comes to that? Even before the election, fans of cannabis in Washington state were worried about DUI provisions of the law that could get people…

New stuff from Michael W. Dean

Hey. Free movies. The very accomplished Michael W. Dean has a new video out. You know Michael from the Freedom Feens podcast and his earlier film Guns And Weed: The Road To Freedom.* And from interviews I did with him and his fellow conspirator Neema Vedadi back in 2010 (starting here). Now he’s back with an instructional video for beginning shooters, Gun Training With The Non-aggression Principle, Vol 1.* Here’s a trailer: Yeah, I know everybody will argue about this technique or that. Gunfolk always do. But it’s an intriguing idea, linking firearms training to the non-aggression principle. Ha! That’ll…

Don’t know how long this will last, but the Kindle edition of Jackie Clay-Atkinson’s Ask Jackie: Canning Basics book is free right now on Amazon. Can be downloaded to any Kindle device, including free Kindle readers for the PC. (Thanks to B for the tip!) (Ooops. Sorry. Apparently the free offer ended just hours after I set up these links.) Speaking of books, anybody read Two Cheers for Anarchism? If so, what did you think of it? Here’s a review. And an Amazon link. It’s by the James C. Scott, same guy who wrote The Art of Not Being Governed…

Leave it to Tam

Hasn’t it been a sputteringly surreal experience, listening to sports commentators suddenly become “gun control” experts, just because one maladjusted, overly indulged thug … did what thugs do? Leave it to Tam, Mistress of Snark, to know exactly how to respond. (Side note: Why aren’t the “experts” calling just as loudly for compound bow control?)

Friday links — and more thank yous

Why is the U.S. government building a secret underground facility in Israel? And why are U.S. taxpayers funding a project that includes religious symbols at every doorway? The mezzuzah is a charming tradition, but the fedgov funds enough superstitions without secretly forcing us to pay for another one. Memo to robbers: If you want that girly-girl c-store clerk to take you seriously don’t charge in firing your guns into the air. James Bond, Dirty Harry Callahan and what gun is “good enough.” Can’t say I agree with the recommendation, not even one little bit. But the thinking is interesting. (H/T…

Friday links and videos

A handful of links and two (longish) videos for your Friday and weekend pleasure: Nano-material stops bullets? This I’d like to see. (H/T PT) Among all the other laughs of the Petraeus scandal is the scandalously flawed method the lovers used to hide their email correspondence. (And this guy was the nation’s top intelligence officer?) The Electronic Frontier Foundation has analysis and advice. So does the ACLU. (Tip o’ hat to JG) It’s pretty amazing what the FBI went through to trace emails that probably weren’t even illegal — and the kind of data they had fingertip access to (e.g.…

Tribes. (Aka help Tam, Queen of Snark, and maybe win some cool gunstuff.) Hm. Happy life? Meaningful life? Choices … choices … How to devise more secure passwords. (Yeah, we’ve been here before; always a good reminder, though.) I know some cynics think Obama and Eric Holder will kill recreational cannabis in Washington and Colorado. They’ll try. But this is a battle they’re going to lose. The new legalization is already making waves in Mexico. And having a very, very real effect on prosecutions in Washington state. Hey, look! Europe has turned the corner and is headed for financial stability!…

Well, in some places that was as bad as everybody thought it would be. Oy, that picture of seawater flooding into the PATH station — impressive. A lot of phony photos of Sandy have been circulating, though. I’m not sure this one of a Niagra of seawater flooding into the World Trade Center construction site is real; it’s credited to the AP, but there so much to sort out yet. Is anybody hereabouts planning to participate in National Novel Writing Month? I’m thinking about it, but the idea scares the bejabbers out of me. “The Island Where People Forget to…
