Sometimes ya got it, sometimes ya ain’t. The deep part of winter — my first back in the NorthWET — wasn’t bad. But late winter and spring are dragging on like the worst of January. Cold. Gloomy. Eternally wet. I can’t remember the last time I saw sun. I have vague recollections of spotting blue sky last week, nuking a cup of tea with the intention of sitting on the deck — then discovering it to be pouring rain when I walked out the door. I went to the hardware store yesterday and bought yellow paint for the garret room…

Last weekend I mentioned that if I fix some desired item in my mind garage sales would soon provide. That was in reference to a haul of stuff for my grab-and-go kit. It should also be noted that garage sales provide items that one would never think of fixing in one’s mind. Not if one were sane and sensible, anyway. To wit: I’m not sure what it is. A candy dish? A planter? Who knows? I just know it made me laugh, and that alone was worth the two bucks I donated to the church hosting the sale. I’m not…
Hilarious. “World’s largest army.” J. said this gave him a “much needed big warm fuzzy feeling.” Me, too — mainly because it gives Schumerites cold, prickly feelings. It’s a comforting thought. But if push ever comes to shove, I wanna know what the “army” is going to do about those domestic invaders. Emergency preps on a shoestring. While there’s probably not a lot there that you don’t already know, it’s still food for thought. And it’s definitely help for those who feel they can’t be prepared because they don’t have a million bucks to buy up everything at Cabela’s, Lehman’s,…
Stuff I’ve been saving up … Thomas Jefferson’s bible. I used to have a copy of that. Might still be in the bookcase of my ex-Significant Sweetie. Mmmmm. Pickled carrots. Another of my favorite things, but usually too expensive to buy at a store. Must try that recipe. A so-far neglected discussion thread started by Rarick over at The Mental Militia forums has some definitely odd links “for the bored prepper.” Or non prepper. Definitely for gearheads. This one is supposed to repel dogs. But I think at least one of mine would think it was a dandy playtoy. And…
I was always skeptical about Liberty Dollars. But counterfeiting? Terrorism? That’s insane. Kent McManigal has a fervent rant on the guilty verdict against Bernard von Nothaus. (Tip o’ hat to Rational Review News.) OMG. All the embarrassing coincidences! As with nearly everything else, attitude turns out to be more important than tools when it comes to saving energy. Obama is a war monger as well as a war mongering criminal. And a liar. But you knew that. Nothing new here. But if the Nobel Peace Prize committee had any shame (which they don’t and never have), they’d be voting on…
Wow. Have you seen that video of the kid finally striking back against a tormentor? here and here are a couple of follow-ups. Apparently there was no injury, though you’d swear the little bully would have gotten a broken leg out of it. Sucks that the victim got the same punishment as his tormentor. Washington wrecks your washing machine. SecurID. You may have one. Careful. Turns out not to be so secure. Via The Agitator: Resilent Japan. But as the author, Jesse Walker, is quick to say, it’s not just the Japanese who respond well in the midst of catastrophe.…
Angry man pours gasoline on himself. Police arrive. One guess: What does a genius cop do? (Tip o’ hat to P.T.) Intelligent, up-to-date discussion of the Japanese nuclear plant at The Mental Militia Forums. (Tip o’ hat to S.) An era has truly ended. Augustus Owsley Stanley, III is dead. For a brief, shining time, Purple Owsley was the holy grail of psychedelics. Oh yeah, and there was that band he was involved with, too. Oh lord. You know I’m for creators’ rights. But the government version is getting crazier and more Draconian by the day. Absurd. Government by and…
In better earthquake news: a pair of dogs survive the tsunami. Not only survive, but show some smarts in doing so. Pretty good article on datamining. What it can and can’t do. The author mentions Ghostery, which I already have on Firefox. He calls it tracker-monitoring software, but it’s really much more than that. Depending on your settings, it also turns off most tracking. It slowed my browser down noticeably, but it’s worth it. Man with Fourth Amendment written on his chest sues the TSA. You go, Aaron Tobey. Is the NRA finally developing some spine? That’s an NY Times…
Even the Japanese government now says the radiation leaks have become dangerous to humans living nearby. The disaster is now considered a six — worse than Three Mile Island, less than Chernobyl — on the seven-level International Nuclear, Radiological Event Scale. Worth noting: Even a seven doesn’t imply the “WE’RE ALL GONNA DIE!” scenario (scroll down for map and info on exposure levels). But just in case (and H/T L.D.), here and here are sites for monitoring the jet stream.
