Wednesday miscellany

Paul Allen and Burt Rutan have done it again. Whoohoo! We might make it seriously into space despite the government’s worst efforts. (Tip o’ hat to PT.) I don’t know what Cadbury Schwepps has to do with dogs in cars. But this is a thing of beauty. (And here are more dogs in cars in slow-motion if you liked that.) So. Why wasn’t the police officer charged with reckless endangerment or discharging a firearm in a somewhat inopportune place or …? Ron Paul overtaking Gingrich in Iowa? Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy. Speaking of Newt, didn’t you think it…

Tuesday miscellany

Even lab rats, it seems, have empathy. Now, if only government agents could be raised to that level. I had no idea that my second favorite poem (and the one I most totally identify with) had such universal appeal. Only a government could manage to create a butter crisis. “The best way to understand the Euro Crisis is to get a DVD of “Animal House” starring John Belushi.” Snort! Open letter to some professorial tax eaters from Michael and Debra Jean Dean. The average household has a post-crash net worth of nearly $500,000??? Are you kidding? Where do I sign…

Candle Lantern — Nifty!

I mentioned that one of my Christmas presents was some cool emergency gear from my Amazon wish list. To wit: A UCO Candle Lantern from Industrial Revolution. (Note: All links in this blog entry are Evil Greedy Capitalist Amazon Associate Links.) Not just the lantern, but a lantern “value pack” including four 9-hour candles and a sturdy fleece bag. RJM, the mystery man who sent it, also added an extra pack of candles and a reflector — something I didn’t even know about. I admit, when I put the lantern on my wish list back in 2010, I did it…

Six cows, an “antigovernment” family …

… and a Predator drone. Somehow it’s not surprising that “antigovernment” people would be the first. Supposedly they used the drone to make sure these “enemies” were outside and unarmed. Not sure how they could tell about the unarmed part. Do Predators see through clothes, or what? (Thanks once again to JS.)

Radio requests

Okay. Need some help from the Living Freedom Brain Trust (aka you guys). A reader asked for my recommendations for freedom-oriented streaming radio. But aside from NPR in the car, I never listen to radio. He had already found this — which has some pretty good stuff on it, once you get past former libertarian Neal Boortz. I’m not sure everything on that page is up-to-date, though. In fact, I’m sure it’s not. I was able to add podcasts from Brian Wilson and the Freedom Feens guys. But he’s looking primarily for live streaming. So you tell me: What are…

How doctors die

Not like the rest of us. They insist on less treatment. Have you given thought to this — or better yet put instructions in writing (and gotten those instructions into the right hands)? Okay, it won’t do much good if you’re living out your days in a FEMA detention camp, I know. (Overtreatment won’t be a problem there, I’m sure.) Or if we end up with the much-dreaded Obamacare “death panels.” But for those still on their own, I suspect that medical choices are a neglected variety of freedom. People don’t like to think about the subject.

Feds (and their fellows) taking an interest in your preps?

This came this morning from Daniel Adams of the wonderful “Facebook for farmers,” Earthineer. (Check it out if you haven’t already.) “Federal Agents Demand Customer Lists from Mormon Food Storage Facility.” Given the lack of detail in the report (which federal agency, which Mormon facility, and did anybody ask to see a warrant or a subpoena?) I’m not 100% sure it’s true. But you and I can be 100% sure more than one fed agency wants to know who’s storing food or making other preparations for hard times — and that those they learn about will be considered potential “terrorists.”…

Too good and too true?

Two on the military: Almost certainly too good to be true. But wouldn’t it be wonderful? (Tip o’ hat to JS.) Definitely true and far less good, particularly in light of the onrushing National Defense Authorization Act ADDED: Speaking of the NDAA, why are they continuing to be so secretive about it even now that it’s gone into conference committee? (Another h/t JS.) And speaking of “too good to be true,” if you were encouraged by the Obama administration’s threat to veto the bill if it contained the military law-enforcement and limitless detention provisions, you can stop now. Our Glorious…

When seniors explode

And to lighten the mood … Here’s brief commentary from one of my favorite radio guys, Dave Ross: “When Seniors Explode.” (Hint: His topic is the TSA.) This comes courtesy of one of my even more favorite radio guys, Brian Wilson.

So many days of infamy

(A rant.) Yesterday were were all supposed to pause and “remember” the bombing of Pearl Harbor, even though most of us weren’t alive then and therefore can’t actually remember it. Of course we should be aware of important historic events. But why is it always a matter of dates and photos and survivor accounts without context? And why must we genuflect only to certain dates? December 7, September 11, July 4? We perform our obeisances to the horrors and tragedies of December 7, 1941, then go about our business. How many of us ever even learned that the very next…
