  • You thought Sen. Joe Manchin was a traitor because he wants the feds to have power to prevent all gun transfers? So did I. But fact is, the man is too stupid to be a traitor.
  • That photographer in Turkey who captured the murder of the Russian ambassador was amazingly brave, dedicated, and good at his job. You can debate whether the photos were in good taste, but you can’t deny his sheer guts.
  • From Dana in comments: the story of Pinchas Rosenbaum, who disguised himself as a Nazi to save Jews in Hungary.

  • The shortest day of the year

The solstice arrived this morning. At the very moment I posted this, in fact. While most of us, including me, were snug in our beds. So celebrate the return of light, fellow denizens of the northern hemisphere. Be relieved that the sun has not abandoned us after all — even if it’s not giving us much warmth for a few months yet. I celebrate with a feast, followed by silence and candlelight. In the morning, there’s music to enjoy. “When the Winter Comes”: “Logs to Burn”: “Praise Midwinter”: And an instrumental medley of other winter tunes, Celtic style:

    Just an artsy-snowy picture

One day last week we were expecting an ice storm. Never did get it, but we received a pretty little snow dusting. I took this photo, which I just remembered while going through the camera card for last post’s Boy Scout image. Taken through a window with melting snow droplets on it. Artsy on purpose, seriously. Not just a bad photo because I was too cozy and warm to want to venture outside. Truth.

  • One of these things is not like the other. A meditation on Sesame Street, shotguns, and the irrationality of the NFA courtesy of L.S. and David Codrea.
  • Seventeen signs you’re intelligent — even if it doesn’t feel like it. Hm. Twelve of the 17 fit me. Does that mean I’m only slightly above dimwitted?
  • So much change. A delegation from the stodgy old American Legion has met with Trump in the cause of getting cannabis re-scheduled.

  • I don’t really care who hacked the DNC and John Podesta. Whoever handed that info over to Wikileaks did the world a big favor. But I agree (once again) with Glenn Greenwald: these sketchy bits of third-hand gossip being reported as “news from the CIA” claiming the Russians did it do not qualify as news by any standard.
  • Justin Raimondo calls this businesss an attempted CIA coup. One of many, but don’t they usually stick to third-world countries?
  • No more John Stossel show. 🙁

  • Opera and perseverance

I’m about as non-musical as a person can be. I can’t tell Beyonce from a bass fiddle or a minor chord from a high c. I listen to very little music and like even less of it. My efforts to change that have, dare I say, fallen flat, allegrissimo. But I’ve always had a soft spot for opera. Maybe that’s how I found myself reading Sing for Your Life, the beautifully written and unlikely story of Ryan Speedo Green, the rising young bass-baritone who has sung with the Metropolitan Opera and the Vienna State Opera. Reading Sing for Your Life…

    Monday thoughts

We had our first snow last night. Didn’t amount to much. Barely stuck and was soon washed away by 35-degree rain. Only reason I mention it is because it’s the first lowland snow we’ve had in more than two years. It’s normal for us to get snow anywhere from one to five times a winter, but the last two winters have been too warm (not global warming but a big warm “blob” offshore). Very wet, but warm. Well, as winters go, anyhow. More snow expected in the next few days. Me, I’d chose warm and dry, were it an option.…

  • Lots of media outlets are reporting on Jill Stein’s efforts to get recounts in the three “Hillary firewall” states that Trump won. How come so few are reporting on Stein’s comically scammish and ever-escalating claims about the amount of money she needs?
  • The Electronic Frontier Foundation reports on censorship in social media (.pdf). (Very readable report, too.)
  • Where is Julian Assange and what has happened to Wikileaks?

  • The great Glenn Greenwald hands their asses to the media stars who attended that “secret” meeting with Trump on Monday then blabbed about how hurt they were by his attitude.
  • Borepatch on the blindness of the educated class. But really on culture. Great read. BTW, @Borepatch is now on Gab.ai.
  • And once again Gottlieb’s denatured JPFO (and Bearing Arms) comes out in favor of anti-gun laws.
