Deadlining, so nothing Deep and Profound at the moment (not even anything deep and profound without the capital letters). But lotsa, lotsa links …. Here’s some insider dope on the weird stuff you may have heard is going on at Cato. Mobile phone privacy tips. And when it comes to privacy, you just gotta love Mozilla. You know that stupid TSA rule against more than three ounces of liquid? Well see if you can figure this one. And speaking of milk, turns out you can get a bigger “price on your head” for selling the raw stuff than for oh…

Government evils — but I repeat myself
Always true, but especially relevant right now. The NDAA with its “lock ’em up and throw away the key” atrocities became effective as of last night. And now we get to “look forward” to HR 347 unless Obama suddenly grows a conscience and a respect for the Bill of Rights. (H/T JS)
Real world disaster preparedness. The other day in comments, clark posted this link to a Katrina survivor’s experience and observations. Very much worth a read. I particularly liked this page that sums it all up. Simple, clever experiment reveals why we need to keep moving for health’s sake. One of the reasons, anyhow. Murphy’s Law. Your chances of a screw-up can now be calculated. Except … er … doesn’t Murphy’s Law ensure that the calculations are likely to be screwed up? “Hijacking the General Welfare Clause.” Historical research from wonderful new blogger AgoristDon. Better than a cop? Deer saves woman…
We may need eight hours of sleep, but maybe not in the way we’ve been told. Two related from NPR: The “right to be forgotten” threatens free speech and how much does the cloud know? (Tip o’ hat to PT.) An open letter to the MPAA’s Chris Dodd from Eric S. Raymond. You might save this one for when you’ve got plenty of time, but here’s a special report from ShadowStats on our prospects for hyperinflation. Yoga. And sex. About those FEMA camps … (Can anybody tell me why we’re going to need camps for “displaced citizens” now when we’ve…
A big build-up. The cooperation of 25 worldwide media outlets. The hacking skills of Anonymous. A dramatic (and humorous) countdown. An announcement at midnight (GMT) and five million emails revealing how “private” intelligence service Stratfor and governments (not to mention Big Money and Big Media) work cooperate collude together. I don’t know how significant this is going to be, but if the reality matches the build-up (a build-up that showed Twitter is definitely good for something besides timely Oscar buzz), big. ADDED: And Anonymous has an announcement (semi-related) coming up in a few hours.
This is seriously interesting, considering the source. But seriously, Wyoming, an aircraft carrier? And a military draft? You Wyomegians — and I know there are a few who read this blog — are you sensing some tongues stuck in cheeks here? (H/T Jesse Walker on Twitter.)
“Pigeon: Impossible.” 🙂 How companies learn your secrets. The bit about the pregnant women (pages 6 & 7) is the creepiest. Hint: aside from not giving ’em any personal data (e.g. pay cash, never participate in a survey, etc.), don’t be a creature of habit. Oh, those tidy Swiss. Now they’re set to clean up outer space. How the brain responds to disaster. This specifically pertains to earthquakes, but I know from experience that it applies more broadly. (Tip o’ hat to PT.) Long feared, now here: microchips you swallow with your meds to report your body’s doings. This is…
Now the gummint wants to predict the future. Given their fear of us, I suspect surveillance of us will play a large part. And their “predictions” will be just as wrong as their pernicious assumptions. Yep, I’d say that collection agency got just a tad bit out of hand. Hope that old lady beats the &^%$# out of ’em. “Spirit of a Racer in a Dog’s Blood” Oh, so this is where all those Downfall videos come from! Cubicleism: a new school of art. 🙂 (Actually, this guy does all these copies of classics on a white board. With dry-erase…
There’s something to be learned about freedom from all that. But what, exactly? 1. Individual action and adrenaline go together. -S pointed this out in the comments. If we’re ever going to get past the completely ineffectual “call the police or call the landlady” stage with the Neighbor from Hell, we’re going to have to put ourselves on the line in some way large or small. The same is true if we intend to halt the police state. It can’t be done nicely or “within the system.” Most people don’t like putting themselves on the line. So as -S says,…
Recreational cannabis soon to see widespread legalization? Let’s hope Time magazine isn’t as wrong on this as it often is on so many other things. “We the People” is rapidly losing its appeal around the world. No surprise. (Tip o’ hat to MtK.) Can’t you just picture Obama in a Joe Arpaio jail? Chortle. (And thanks, JS.) Poetic justice. Obama vs the Catholic church. And vice versa. If you had any doubt that copyright overreach had sunk to absurd lows, you can become a true believer now. Another state legislature takes on the NDAA. (How much would you like to…
