  • There should be a special hell — a very special hell — for so-called private companies that thrive by enabling mass, unlawful government surveillance. (H/T MJR)
  • I’ve complained of authoritarian bigotry from some of the most ardent Trumpists. But ain’t nothing compares with this from some San Francisco Clintonista, who wants Trump supporters to die and their houses to burn down. Unless this is particularly wicked satire, it’s additional evidence that the authoritarian left is more violent than the right in the U.S. will ever be.
  • Though I don’t, can’t, and won’t ever support Trump, I understand those who find themselves increasingly pushed in his direction.

  • Actual support for “gun control” is so lacking that the Clinton campaign chose to fake a supportive editorial.
  • Of course, we know there is plenty of support for “gun control” — in the most insanely misguided way. Hate to see somebody legally carrying a firearm? Does his potential “violence” offend you? Just grab his gun and shoot him. (And hopefully go to prison for a very long time.)
  • Google, having left “don’t be evil” long in its past, has now breached the never-very-solid barrier of supposedly anonymized tracking. They’re tracking you by name wherever you go. On a strictly voluntary basis, of course. For now.

I bitch about the man. He is a loathsome toad. But I do understand why people place their hopes in Trump and stand by their views. Especially with more of Hillary’s evil being revealed every moment. And as Vin Suprynowicz reminds us, those Hillarian evils are oozing out despite the media’s most shamelessly shameful efforts. There are still, even in this Augean stable of an election, rare moments of civility between the parties. A cynic might see it as collegiality among rival bands of brigands. Okay, so you achieved “unawareness.” Got a little problem with “compliant” part, though. Hershel Smith…

    We are not the guilty

Historian has another of his remarkably philosophical blogs, new today. This one is on who are the guilty in the present mess we’re in. Historian’s writing is powerful and true and just a little bit poetic. As it tells a truth this piece carries a drumbeat of both terror and triumph. Absolutely be sure to read it; it isn’t long, but it’s packed full. It made me think of something related. We, you and me, out here on this blog in the early winter of liberty, are not responsible. We may have been at some time in some miniscule scale…

    Fathers for well-armed daughters

This is a thing of beauty — other than being a Trump commercial. You know, I’ve never heard anybody explain why they actually believe Trump — on anything, but especially on the Second Amendment. I absolutely see why people would want to v*te against Hillary, even if it meant casting their v*te for Lex Luthor in a King Kong suit. I sympathize. Totally. But why believe that a rich, super-authoritarian Manhattanite who has not only contributed to the Clintons (which, of course as a businessman he might have done just in self defense) but socially hobnobbed with them … sincerely…

  • Niall Ferguson on simplifiers vs complicators and how they can both be big problems in politics and government.
  • What the hell is a “security directive,” anyway? Sounds like something Ayn Rand would make up for her villains to impose. And why would any supposedly private company jump to comply with one? And furtherwhy, after the righteous drubbing the big ‘Net companies took for kissing the NSA’s butt (post Snowden) would Yahoo (and probably others) be so eager to continue osculating stinky feddie posterior?
  • Speaking of security, Bruce Schneier says, “Stop trying to fix the user” and fix the underlying systems. (I think he’s a lot right and a bit wrong, as spotted by his commentors.)

  • One of those odd and probably meaningless encounters. But …

Wednesday was a heartbreaking end-of-summer day. Beautiful. Perfect. But sad because even without looking at the weather report, you know you might not have another one like it for a long, long time. So Ava and I took advantage as much as possible. I worked and read and knitted (another dragon) outdoors while she lounged and barked at the neighbors’ invading chickens (which they’ve given up attempting to keep in their hole-y yard). In the afternoon, we took a long drive, followed by a walk along the river. And there we had one of those odd moments where it’s hard…

The economy slides closer to that black hole. Confirmation of that unlikely truth: pot users are thinner than contemporaries with similar lifestyles. And confirmation of an unsurprising truth: pot prohibitionists have as much respect for the law and for truth as anti-gunners. Second Amendment sanctuary cities. Imagine it; government actually serving the people and our rights for a change. “For the first time in a generation, Democrats are betting they’re on the winning side of the gun issue.” And they’re sending out Giffords and Kelly as their “majority” representatives to the swing states. There’s not a reason in the world…
