Over at The Price of Liberty, Mama Liberty has the first passages of what looks to become a new novel. And it all started with the comment section here at Living Freedom. So. Where’s the real “war on women”? This one could actually be killing some — and all in the name of progress and humanity. (H/T O) “How to send anonymous email without getting caught.” (Thanks to JG for the best article yet on this month’s hot privacy topic.) Alleged “private” enterprise is once again poised to help the fedgov become more obtrusive. Cannabis reform marches on. Whatever Mordor…

What to do ’til the EMTs arrive (and what to expect when they do)

This is another guest post from Will Kone (BusyPoorDad), who works as a paramedic and emergency manager. I couldn’t decide whether it was part of the Preparedness Priorities series or not, so I’m running it as a standalone. I know many people are preparing for the day when the EMTs and the ambulance won’t arrive. But until then, it may help to understand their methods and how best to either assist them or keep from hindering them. As usual, I expect Will will be on hand to talk further about this in the comment section. —– You used your kit.…

Flood cleanup: a question for the Commentariat

The other day, reader “just waiting” emerged from two weeks of post-Sandy blackout. He conveyed some lessons learned and joked that he couldn’t see a downside to the storm from where he sat. However, there’s a definite downside in the aftermath. This morning he requests help from the Living Freedom Commentariat: I’ve never had to clean up after a major flood before (water was about 2 ft high over entire first floor). I’ve done some research and got the basics, but I bet there’s tips and pitfalls, what not to do’s, etc. that the sites I’ve seen don’t list. With…

Tribes. (Aka help Tam, Queen of Snark, and maybe win some cool gunstuff.) Hm. Happy life? Meaningful life? Choices … choices … How to devise more secure passwords. (Yeah, we’ve been here before; always a good reminder, though.) I know some cynics think Obama and Eric Holder will kill recreational cannabis in Washington and Colorado. They’ll try. But this is a battle they’re going to lose. The new legalization is already making waves in Mexico. And having a very, very real effect on prosecutions in Washington state. Hey, look! Europe has turned the corner and is headed for financial stability!…

Preparedness priorities: First aid, part II

This is another guest blog from Will Kone, aka BusyPoorDad. His first installment is here. —– What are the minimal items to have in a first aid kit? We have all seen the ads, heard the sales pitches, wallowed in the fear-mongering marketing. “You MUST have this special kit! Your life depends on it!” Which is why companies who sell specialized first-aid kits feel they have to charge so much for stuff they sell. After all, it must be great, it costs a whole lot! I have nothing against making money selling stuff. And there is value in having someone…

Preparedness priorities: First aid, part I

This is a guest post from Will Kone, aka BusyPoorDad, whose bio appears at the end of the column. Though he is busy indeed, he has huge expertise in the areas of first aid and emergency management. He has agreed to write a series of articles on those and related topics. These will appear irregularly, as he has time and gets the inspiration to write them. BTW, I will be returning to the topic of water storage; just not sure when. Will’s post on what to have in a first-aid kit will appear later this week. —– Where to learn…

Well, in some places that was as bad as everybody thought it would be. Oy, that picture of seawater flooding into the PATH station — impressive. A lot of phony photos of Sandy have been circulating, though. I’m not sure this one of a Niagra of seawater flooding into the World Trade Center construction site is real; it’s credited to the AP, but there so much to sort out yet. Is anybody hereabouts planning to participate in National Novel Writing Month? I’m thinking about it, but the idea scares the bejabbers out of me. “The Island Where People Forget to…

Obama staffer: vote early and often. (H/T O) Those prescription drugs in your emergency kit might last longer than you think. Maybe decades longer. (I’d be cautious, though, especially with antibiotics.) Why is the Taliban so scared of little girls? And why are Muslim leaders always so quiet about monstrous acts like this? So, Barack, you wanna debate civil liberties? Why do Ashkenazi Jews tend to have such high IQs? Interesting speculations. I’ve been having trouble getting around to several things, including a review of Wendy McElroy’s new book, The Art of Living Free. So just let me say a…

Ein Volk, ein Reich, ein Obama. We eat this stuff??? Occasionally, there is justice of a sort after a puppycide. But no real justice until the cops know they’ll have to pay personally. Otherwise, it’s just more of the usual from thugs, cowards, and incompetents. Gold bars salted with tungsten: not just a paranoid rumor any more. Beloved service dog Bingo Hein has died, leaving a legacy of giving. J.D. Tuccille takes apart that report on the angelic innocence of Eric Holder. Or at least the media coverage of it.

“A Most Extraordinary Life.” (H/T F) You heard about the woman who got charged $83,000 for two doses of anti-scorpion venom worth $100 per dose. Here’s some background on why — and how Obamacare is only going to make it worse. What do you do when your beagle eats your cash? (Hint: It’s easier, though no less unpleasant, than getting your cash back from asset-forfeiting govthugs.) Survival preps: A week in a bucket. BusyPoorDad posted this is this morning’s comments. A very good idea, though I’d aim for a less grain-heavy mix of foods. Sometimes you see a claim that’s…
