I should have thought of this earlier. I really should have. But however belatedly, I think it would be great to create a sort of directory here at the blog for the businesses of supporters of Living Freedom. And other freedomistas. In particular I was thinking about businesses that do national or international shipping and might be good places to go Christmas shopping. But it goes beyond that. NFI on my part for any of these; I just think having a directory of businesses within our Living Freedom community is a good idea. Two come to mind immediately: Hi Mountain…

… the Santas, secret and otherwise, who are making my Christmas (and Ava’s, Robbie’s, and Nadja’s) so merry: To SR for the mmmmm-delicious “flossies” (aka water buffalo penises). And I hasten to add that it’s the furkids’ opinion of “deliciousness” I’m quoting here. Ain’t catchin’ me anywhere near one o’ them things. To WH for the Aqua Blox — which will not only give me an extra-convenient five-year water storage method, but will enable some experimentation with carrying them in vehicles and such. To MH for the delightfully offbeat film Off the Map — the story of an IRS agent…
The Obamacare future is nigh. (H/T JB) PBS (rather belatedly) asks if we’re safer with all that “suspicious activity” reporting. (Tip o’ hat to RLW) Is there a vampire on the loose? (Or merely a clever tourism scheme?) Did you see anything in the MSM about pennies and nickels being phased out next year? (ADDED: Nevermind. It’s a hoax.) Anybody here ever drink a switchel? I’d never heard of it until I ran into the term in the fascinatingly eccentric little book The Alcoholic Republic: An American Tradition (thanks for the recommend, JG). Apparently at one time the switchel was…
Over the weekend I canned eight pints of this and 5-1/2 pints of that. And from start to (endless) cleanup, it took about half the weekend. The whole time I kept wondering, “How did Grandma do it?” My grandmother (like yours, most likely) canned hundreds of pints and quarts of … everything. It was part of the routine of feeding an enormous family. And she did it without help. No one but Grandma was allowed in Grandma’s kitchen. (Which was unfortunate, because not only did she work herself to death; her daughters grew up with minimal kitchen skills. But that’s…
Why is the U.S. government building a secret underground facility in Israel? And why are U.S. taxpayers funding a project that includes religious symbols at every doorway? The mezzuzah is a charming tradition, but the fedgov funds enough superstitions without secretly forcing us to pay for another one. Memo to robbers: If you want that girly-girl c-store clerk to take you seriously don’t charge in firing your guns into the air. James Bond, Dirty Harry Callahan and what gun is “good enough.” Can’t say I agree with the recommendation, not even one little bit. But the thinking is interesting. (H/T…
Another big round of thank yous for another big round of holiday cheer: For two much-wanted books, thank you, PT. For the GIANT Kong Wubba (one of the few toys all three of my dogs will play with), thank you, TH. For ANOTHER Giant Kong Wubba and scrumptious, healthy cashew butter (an item I rarely get for myself), the pups and I thank ES. And for Wild Harvest (a book for the Pacific Northwest that, charmingly, was shipped all the way from England), thank you, TW. For more plants of the Northwest and the Atlas Shrugged DVD, smooch to GWF.…
wow. Yesterday I requested help pushing this month’s Amazon totals to 320 shipped items — a plateau I’ve barely even seen off in the distance in previous months. To make it, 53 more items would need to be shipped via my Amazon links before Friday. wow. This morning — 92 new items ordered. This morning — 72 new items shipped or instantly delivered. You did it. You can stop now. Or not. 🙂 wow. And you didn’t just do this with cheap trinkets and $.99 Kindle books, though that’s all it would have taken to get the needed numbers. You…
Wow. Promising news for dogs and humans alike. Experimental treatment helps paralyzed dogs walk again by injecting them with cells grown from their own noses. ‘Bout time judges started questioning some of this wholesale data scooping. Another example of how government “help” stinks. Literally, in this case Sigh. Despite Katrina. Despite Sandy. Despite everything. The preparedness message still isn’t reaching Joe Average. (Via The Price of Liberty) Small favor Thanks to you using those Amazon links, I’m on the way to my best-ever Amazon month! And boy, is it welcome! Now, if you’re willing, you can help accomplish one small…
I don’t know Fiona Apple’s music at all. But I expect I’d like her as a person. And I’m not the only one. (Beware: sad dog stories.) Much happier animal (and cop) story. (H/T JG) Texas high school trying to expel student for refusing to wear a spychip. It’s all about money and control, of course. (Tip o’ hat to H) How many more of these stories are we going to see? Anti-gay lawyer arrested for kiddie porn (and more). And here’s another completely unsurprising story: Detroit will run out of money by January. And another non-surprise! Senate bill touted…
If I could make one more Christmas wish, it would be that when you buy from my Amazon wish list, you add a note to identify yourself and (even better) give me a way to contact you. Wonderful gifts have begun arriving, but some senders aren’t outing themselves. Or I have a name but no contact info. So to all I’ve been able to thank personally and all I may never know … For the two-disc set of Hunger Games DVDs … thank you, Mr. or Ms Anonymous. (I watched the movie the other day and it was even better…
