… in an emergency? And how helpful are you? Yesterday’s emergency drill by Jake MacGregor got me pondering that old question. In an emergency, or just generally in hard times, who helps you out and how helpful are you in turn? If you’ve lived in the same neighborhood for a long time or if you have family in your vicinity, then you’ve probably got a pretty good start on answering this question. You know from long experience who’s reliable and who’s not, who’s trustworthy and who’s not. You know who’s got certain skills or tools. You know who can keep…

The tyrants now taking over the U.S. may have a hard time getting around all these lovely new guns. Yes, people often seem spineless and oblivious. Millions actually seem to welcome the police state (including, alas, millions who claim to be for limited government). But deep down, people know. People know. (Tip o’ hat to MTK for the link.)
(By Jake MacGregor with a few small edits/clarifications by me.) THIS IS A DRILL The following is ONLY a drill. THIS IS TO BE TREATED AS REAL BUT IS ONLY A DRILL. Situation: Last Night the European Union currency (Euro) collapsed. Overnight, markets crashed as uncertainty roiled the world. The President is set to make a closed-door address to a joint session of Congress at 11 AM Eastern. The Stock Market is closed until further notice. Banks have closed their doors with a taped-up sign reading, “Due to an Executive Order 19-173A all Banks, Credit Unions and Savings & Loans…
I didn’t know this until recently, but when S.W.A.T. magazine first started publishing in the early 1980s, its name wasn’t meant to imply “Special Weapons and Tactics” (aka police SWAT teams). The original name was “Survival Weapons and Tactics.” Well, if you happen to have a copy of the February 2012 issue, which just came out, you might notice that’s what the tagline (just below the title) says once again. Publisher Rich Lucibella and editor Denny Hansen each got the idea independently that the magazine should shift its emphasis from heavy cop-and-soldier material to information for hard times. They were…
January 1 is a really dumb time to start a year. Seriously, you’ve just passed over a nice, handy, logical solstice, and now you’re starting a new year — exactly why? But there you have it. I used to make resolutions on my birthday. Or the solstice. Either of which provides a good marker for newness. But since this is the time when such things are done in public, here I am. Today’s list of resolutions (there may be more to come, depending on time and mood) has to do with preparedness. Got some additional suggestions? Add ’em in the…
Talk about SHTF! Here’s the blog of somebody who survived a solid year of you-know-what impacting the rotary airfoil. He now teaches others. His English isn’t perfect. Never mind that. (Tip o’ hat to A.) —– And you’ve probably heard about this incredibly lucky young lady rescued from her car in the Arizona highlands after nine days stranded in snow. This article doesn’t say it, but she was apparently on an extended road trip, wandering around with no destination and nobody knowing where she was. In December. A mile above sea level. With snowstorms forecast. With a dead cellphone. With…
I mentioned that one of my Christmas presents was some cool emergency gear from my Amazon wish list. To wit: A UCO Candle Lantern from Industrial Revolution. (Note: All links in this blog entry are Evil Greedy Capitalist Amazon Associate Links.) Not just the lantern, but a lantern “value pack” including four 9-hour candles and a sturdy fleece bag. RJM, the mystery man who sent it, also added an extra pack of candles and a reflector — something I didn’t even know about. I admit, when I put the lantern on my wish list back in 2010, I did it…
This came this morning from Daniel Adams of the wonderful “Facebook for farmers,” Earthineer. (Check it out if you haven’t already.) “Federal Agents Demand Customer Lists from Mormon Food Storage Facility.” Given the lack of detail in the report (which federal agency, which Mormon facility, and did anybody ask to see a warrant or a subpoena?) I’m not 100% sure it’s true. But you and I can be 100% sure more than one fed agency wants to know who’s storing food or making other preparations for hard times — and that those they learn about will be considered potential “terrorists.”…
Shut up. When the Feds are involved. Because this is one way they trick you into becoming a felon, as Ken at Popehat knows. Incredible videos of bizarre natural phenomena. Freedom Feens Fun Forum. New kid on the block for freedomista discussion. From Michael W. Dean and Neema Vedadi. Dave Duffy blogged this first, but it’s encouraging enough to deserve repeating. “For your own good” is the same the world over. (Tip o’ hat to DA.) Standardized testing: it’s even worse than you might think. (Tip o’ hat to JS.) Bring health care back home. Tenting in the old backyard.…
This Firearm Preparedness Primer is just that — a primer. It’s probably too basic for most folk hereabouts. Your newbie friends and relatives on the other hand …
