Former Seattle police chief knows from experience: cops are blowing it in their handling of OWS. (Tip o’ hat to C^2.) Family reluctantly surrenders its beloved island. I give you one guess as to why. I know you can tell me without even clicking on the link. My dogs could do this. I’m two weeks late learning this. So sad. Diaspora* is a great and hopeful creation. Now here’s a perfect example of how one man’s safe-haven is another person’s nightmare. Joel Skousen has named Tennessee as the best retreat location for people living east of the Mississippi. That’s this…

Life in prison for cutting off beards? Ridiculous law gets more ridiculous by the minute. And not only in Feddieland. (Money quote is in the final paragraph.) Terrorist entrapments are getting pretty desperate, too. But get the gummint out of the way and people still do amazingly cool things. Speaking of dogs, here’s another awwwww moment. The tidbit about the crucifix chain is what’s interesting here. Hm. Might hit the pawnshops and second-hand stores for that little bit of preparedness. What George Orwell can teach us about police brutality. Polar Pure water treatment and the drug war. I agree with…
In the summertime this house sits in a verdant meadow near the bank of a river. I pass it on dog walks and think what a lovely place it would be to live. In winter … maybe not so lovely. Although this is the wettest I’ve seen it, the river rises frequently to within a few feet of the foundation. Definitely not the home for someone concerned about preparedness. Today there was a pumping truck of some sort sitting outside with a big red hose snaking into the yard. Can you say “exercise in futility”? While I was at it,…
Okay, let’s start out with some nice stories. (The “nice” in this onecomes quite a ways below the headline.) A pair of Muslim cab drivers save a bagel shop. Anybody here use these emergency foods? “What do a bunch of old Jews know about living forever?” Looks like a useful book to keep on hand Sigh. “The more things change …” They were writing stories like this onejust before 9-11, too. And a coupla months later, the nation was full of robotic government worshippers. Truer words … “The science of lasting happiness.” I don’t usually have the patience to watch…
Remember that big Emergency alert system demonstration? Today at 2:00 p.m. EST. Or, you know … whenever. Maybe. BWG. It’s nice to know that “they” aren’t quite up to taking over the world yet.
… and preparedness (as we were in the previous post), here’s a sobering take on the subject from Brandon Smith. And from Rod Serling. Even though I repeat and repeat that I think the “zombie apocalypse” or even the all-out localized panic is a rare and unlikely occurrence for most of us and shouldn’t be the focus of our preps, I admit the Twilight Zone clip was too believable to watch, even all these decades later. (Tip o’ hat to J.)
I got this comment yesterday from BHM reader Vicki O: I just read [your article “Circle of Friends”] on the Backwoods Home site and I have to say it is the most sensible preparedness info I’ve ever read! I grew up in the sixties reading scifi, and the decisions you would have to make if you had a bomb shelter and no one else did really stressed me out. I live in a neighborhood i just moved to 8 months ago. I know my neighbors enough to say Hi to, but that’s about it. Can you tell me a good…
“The bug-out bag resource list — covering the best sources online.” Excellent collection of links on multiple aspects of bug-out bags — everything from “What is a bug-out bag?” to special-needs bags. Great site in general. Links, links, links on many aspects of preparedness. (A couple of the links are to this blog, I’m happy to say. But there’s so much more.) —– Speaking of preparedness, here’s a real-world idea from a real do-er. One of the readers of this blog, who doesn’t want to be named, is helping his friends develop their preparedness mindset and skills in a way…
