Long weekend read: The masterless people

The escaped slaves of the early Americas (“Maroons” or cimarrons) and their struggle to live free at all cost. Sometimes, according to this piece, their determination to live without masters led to alliances with pirates. I can’t say how gloriously accurate this book excerpt is, but it’s a good read on a subject that deserves more attention. The book itself is a new history of the Jamestown colony, published a few days ago. But this excerpt is more about the slaves and pirates of the Caribbean in the days of Spanish conquest and early English adventurism.

  • John Taylor Gatto, RIP

If he wasn’t the single most important voice for freedom, good sense, and respect for children in education, he was certainly among the top three or four. Dead at 82. From the article: Gatto spent nearly 30 years as a teacher in the infamously rough New York City public school system. He was awarded New York City Teacher of the Year three consecutive years while also being recognized as New York State Teacher of the Year in 1991. Over the course of his career, Gatto was recognized by other educators for the rapport he had built with his students. While…

    Autographed book update

Seven autographed copies of Basics of Resistance are still available. If you ordered your copy before the middle of last week, it should either already be there or arrive in the next day or two. If you ordered after the 25th (DZ, DP, and JM), your books went in the mail this morning and should arrive by next Monday. Grab one of the remaining copies if you want a signed book or want to play Santa for someone who might. Most likely, these will be the last I’ll have to sell for reasons explained at the original announcement. Don’t forget…

Autographed copies of Basics of Resistance

Just in time for Christmas (well, according to the displays in stores), I have 20 copies of Basics of Resistance to sell. These will be autographed personally to the buyer or the buyer’s intended recipients (by me; co-author Kit didn’t sign these copies). They’re $17.50 apiece postpaid, which is just hair above Amazon’s retail price for the book and shipping, depending on where they’ve mysteriously set the price on any given day. These are the only copies I’m ever likely to have to sell. Amazon gives amazingly good terms on author’s copies, but they make up for it by taking…
