Gun nation

“Gun Nation: Inside America’s Gun-Carry Culture.” Yeah, it’s MSM. But The Christian Science Monitor time and again shows it’s the fairest of the MSM. Not a bad profile on how state-level gun rights activists have turned the whole world upside down.

Monday miscellany

Deadlining, so nothing Deep and Profound at the moment (not even anything deep and profound without the capital letters). But lotsa, lotsa links …. Here’s some insider dope on the weird stuff you may have heard is going on at Cato. Mobile phone privacy tips. And when it comes to privacy, you just gotta love Mozilla. You know that stupid TSA rule against more than three ounces of liquid? Well see if you can figure this one. And speaking of milk, turns out you can get a bigger “price on your head” for selling the raw stuff than for oh…

Weekend miscellany

From a recent comment section: Here’s advice from a guy who found himself on the receiving end of other peoples’ hurricane bug-outs. A family of six chronicles how and why they live on $28,000 per year. Its governor willing, South Dakota will join the states that have (something close to) constitutional carry. Naturally, the brave defenders of the people object. Maybe with good reason. “Quietly, Quietly, the Revolution Arrives.” I’ve been saving this up to use in a related ramble of my own. But it’s getting around and Wendy’s essay is too brilliant to neglect. Here’s the latest mini-clip from…

Thursday miscellany

Real world disaster preparedness. The other day in comments, clark posted this link to a Katrina survivor’s experience and observations. Very much worth a read. I particularly liked this page that sums it all up. Simple, clever experiment reveals why we need to keep moving for health’s sake. One of the reasons, anyhow. Murphy’s Law. Your chances of a screw-up can now be calculated. Except … er … doesn’t Murphy’s Law ensure that the calculations are likely to be screwed up? “Hijacking the General Welfare Clause.” Historical research from wonderful new blogger AgoristDon. Better than a cop? Deer saves woman…

Stratfor on the ATF

Not verified. But this (.pdf), from the documents WikiLeaks just released, is a glossary of intelligence terms defined for Stratfor employees. Check out what they say about the ATF: Alcohol, Tobacco, and Fire Arms. Rednecks with a license to kill. Never, ever, ever ask for their help on anything.

Man in a kilt

A couple of years ago, a young friend asked me to draw this picture of him. At the time, I just wasn’t up to it. Now — just ever-so-slightly belatedly — I’m making a start. I like it so far. But since I’m now reaching the point where my next step is inevitably to ruin it, I thought I’d post the in-progress version for posterity. 🙂

Don’t forget to show your appreciation to Starbucks, if you’ve got one near you. (NOTE: Replaced original link with a better one received this morning in email.)

Did you know there’s an organization called Dogs Against Romney? And that one of its members just got stopped by a cop for doing (in effigy) what Romney once did to his family dog? A courageous colonel busts hierarchy to tell truths about Afghanistan. (Tip o’ hat to M.) “Take that, Hobbes!” “Less lethal.” Yeah. In other words — more likely to be casually fired at people who irritate the cops. Help wanted at the TSA. 🙂 Oh, what to think? It’s a crime and a shame when innocent owners have their assets seized. But can they be called “innocent”…

Yes, YOU are a terrorist, Mr. Jones

The End of the American Dream recently took apart two of the FBI’s infamous “look for a terrorist under every bed” brochures. You know, the ones that tell members of different professions whom they should report to the fedgov. In this case, one is a literal “look under the bed,” since the brochure in question addresses all us EEEEEvil terrorists who might be checking into hotels and motels. But as frequent-contributor MJR discovered, all manner of professions get their own terrorist-hunting help from the fibbies. (The differences and similarities between the flyers are fascinating.) Among other things, tattoo artists —…

Super Bowl Sunday links

If you’re going to the big game today I’m sure this’ll make you feel wonderful, no matter who wins or loses: hot dog vendors with the skills and proclivities of the TSA. Of course, if you turn out to be one of the “suspicious” attendees, you won’t feel good at all if they use one of these on you. (And here’s a video.) But it could be worse, you know. All of which got me to wondering how the fedgov would handle somebody like Lawnchair Larry today. Or for that matter, any of us. So if you’re going to do…
