A certain “victim of the American drug war” has wisely said goodbye in her own inimitable style to posting about her experiences as a snitch. Apparently, she’s been in this mood for a long, long time — though I suppose it’s “statist” of me to say so. Speaking of statist, a gifted Virginia schoolboy has been suspended for touching the American flag. We may live in a police state. But at least we can still drink our troubles away. Idaho is going to permit Five Wives vodka to be sold after all. But only after a famous lawyer threatened to…

Back from a good — but busy and tiring — weekend. As Dave says, the Mother Earth News Fair was even bigger and better than last year. My friend and I were there only a few hours in a very full weekend. Some links and a couple of funnies for you: Part one of a four-parter on how DC cops SWATTED a vet because they thought he might have some unregistered guns. (Several people sent me this one, thank you.) The FBI and ATF bust yet another harmless but idiotically careless victim. Check out the middle name on that young…

I’m off for a weekend of wild abandon, debauchery, and carousing. Well, a weekend of going to garage sales, hitting Costco, and spending time at The Mother Earth News Fair, courtesy of Earthineer and Backwoods Home. Which is as close to debauchery as I get, these days. So I leave you with these links and will see you in a few. You may already be on the “do not fly” list — and who knows how many other lists in how many other dark governmental places. But now — something new! You can petition the White House to add you…

Sweetie Update

Here’s Sweetie the heeler doing her morning yoga: Linda took the photo this morning shortly before taking Sweetie in for the first of her big heartworm treatments — made possible by you. Sweetie had the first of her three immiticide shots today and remains at the vet under close observation. If all goes well, she’ll spend her next month of crate rest in one of Linda’s foster homes, where two “dads” have already fallen in love with her. The foster dads have seen her nippy behavior and seem unflapped by it. (Really helps to have heeler-knowledgeable people on the case.…

Ah, such sweet, sweet justice. (Tip o’ hat to Karen.) London Olympics. Tax dollars at work. Double dosage of cuteness: “50 Toddlers Who Are Best Friends with Their Dogs.” (Actually, in a couple of cases, I doubt that would be the dog’s opinion. But gosh darn, they’re still so cuuuuuuuute.) The electronic medical records being pushed so hard by the Obama administration (and previous) distance doctors from their patients — and their patients’ real condition. Drone attacks from victims’ point of view. TSA removes 18-month-old terrorist from plane. Finally (via Radley Balko), we have an explanation for why so many…

Tech blogger announces he’s leaving the ‘Net for a year. Oh, the freedom. Oh, the boredom! (Tip o’ hat to PT) “Eating well without the flavor of shame.” Not primal per se (who cares about the labels?), but influential people are increasingly walking away from the fedgov’s disastrous notions of “healthy” eating. No longer just something from one of your weirder dreams: xkcd meets Gilbert & Sullivan. An in-depth look back on a Joe Arpaio arson and puppycide. In somewhat lighter dog news: a scientist has figured out a way to read dogs’ minds. Well, read their brain activity, anyhow.…

Monday miscellany

How many federal laws are there? Let us (try to) count the ways. A rarity in the rare book room. While I doubt that many readers of this blog want to walk down the street looking like this, it’s a brilliant thing that young fashionistas are thinking of avoiding facial-recognition cams. I could picture Jeremy and Cedra got up like that. I know your heart’s in the right place, Downsize DC. But if congressthingies have become so irresponsible and depraved that they don’t bother to read the bills they vote for, what makes you think that writing to the culprits…

Still deadlining. Picked up a couple more small assignments over the weekend. Sanity retreats again — but I shall chase it down and catch up with it! Dogs (and not wolves) use humans as tools. Every dog person knows that; now scientists do, too. (Tip o’ hat to MLS.) Yes. Really. The border fence is to keep the Mexicans IN. Methodists (good for them) demonstrate against private prisons. Would you like your state to make a deal with CCA guaranteeing to keep all its prisons at 90% occupancy for 20 years? Microsoft cautiously and wimpily begins to back away from…

Still deadlining, but feeling marginally more sane … Another attempt to destroy family farming. This time through bureaucratic good intentions child-safety stupidity. (Tip o’ hat to Dan over at Earthineer.) The NYTimes is stunned to discover clothing designed for concealed carry and other tool-bearing purposes. Rodney King, 20 years after. Oh. You mean that border fence was designed to keep Mexicans in??? The latest atrocity example of “just following procedures” at the TSA. Burger King — which has lately made a move toward upscaling the fast-food biz — is now going to cage-free eggs and pork. Good for BK. The…

Friday miscellany

Stuff I’ve been collecting for you while having the living room flooring done, ripping siding off the house, and extracting rusted bicycles from the foliage.* Oh, and deadlining, too. “Neighbors confront alcoholic child abuser about his lawn.” (Don’t worry, it’s only The Onion this time.) Not that you actually needed proof that government is filled with idiots … An ISP that puts privacy first? Did you know there was a U.S. holiday called Loyalty Day? I didn’t. But it’s coming right up. Clearly we need to celebrate! “Born this way.” This article would be fascinating if it admitted the existence…
